Was on a call with one of my PMs, the other day. He'd asked if I was using AI anywhere in my work. I stated that the primary nature of my work was such that the effort of prompting an AI to produce useful, conformant results and to double-check those results was generally more of a time-investment than just hand-cranking the outputs, myself. Similarly, while AI search summaries have often been useful, there's been a non-zero number of times where they were some degree of incorrect or incomplete and required further, traditional search activities and self-synthesis of those search results into something actionable.

Got into a tangential discussion on the proper place for AI-involved activities (and the whole "when all you have is a hammer…" approach that the #AI #FanBois tend to push). That discussion led to the impact on the junior tech → to senior tech "pipeline". That, if you replace junior techs, today, with AI, then in a couple decades, when your current senior techs retire, you suddenly have technical problems to solve and no one to solve them. You end up with a situation not wholly unlike Y2K's "gotta entice COBOL (etc.) programmers out of retirement to solve these problems".

The PM, in question, is an AI fan-bois. He admitted that he hadn't considered the talent-pipeline problem (and other things I brought up) and that he probably needed to start tempering his enthusiasm with the "insights" I'd offered him.

I am over the tech fandom. It seeks to redefine "technology" narrowly as being about info-products because that feedback loop is the most cheaply addictive thing short of chemical stimulants. This is also a source of dogged incrementalism in "tech"; you experience the hit and then seek out only variations of it.

There can be no functioning principles in such a mental landscape; principles require revolutionary (and initially uncomfortable) changes in technology from time to time. But what I see is the intellectual torpor of a spreading addiction.

At first infotech – and its associated media consumption – could be a pale substitute for rewarding social experiences; now it hijacks that reward system.

Several years back, my employer decided that they needed to implement #Apple Mobile Device Management. They were seeking an organizational-level security certification and, as a shop that's almost exclusively Apple-based for hardware, #MDM was how they could manage the fleet of company-owned and/or -issued laptops, phones and other, in-office devices. I was on a contract that was temporarily operating at a reduced level of effort and my company was still allowing OT at the time. Knowing that I don't much sleep and that I was always looking for OT-cash, I was tasked with creating an MDM solution for them (selecting a service-provider, doing account setup and writing initial security-profiles to apply to devices).

Ever since then, my work-email gets messages from Apple and from the MDM service-provider. Yesterday, I got a "buy the new iPhone 17 Pro" come-on from Apple.

…I, uh, hate Apple products. Not because my early computers weren't Apple. Not because they were a pain in the ass to manage during my first post-college jobs (Apple fleet management in the early 90s really illustrated the conservation of complexity thing — and while Tesler's law mostly frames things in terms of users and systems assuming the inherent complexity, in the case of Apple technology in corporate settings, the burden fell heavily on administrators) plus a lot of the Apple #fanbois I've met over the years have been even more insufferable than the #LinuxZealots I've had to tolerate.

I need a toaster. Whilst looking for a decent Philips one amongst the no-name, high-margin junk that Amazon would rather you buy instead I came across a #Tesla toaster!

Of course it can't be *that* Tesla, otherwise it would only have a buggy touch screen to operate it with, need a proprietary socket in your kitchen, it would either burn the toast or spit it out raw and it would have rave reviews from Tesla #fanbois "I *love* my charcoal toast!!!!!"

So pretty much on #Twitter you will be able to hide your #BlueCheck.. but you also get bumped up in replies and added to the #ForYou list...

..technically making it bone easy to spot people wanting to obfuscate the fact they pay for Twitter either out of embarrassment or trying to look "more popular" than they are..

..and like $7 a month will stop a bot army .. they'll just buy hundreds and out cheat the #fanbois to the top of the #algorithms..

Has this guy even interwebzed?
