Florida university investigates racist slurs in GOP group chat

Florida International University has launched an investigation into a group chat linked to a local GOP official that included violent racist slurs, antisemitic comments and misogynistic language. On Thursday, FIU said campus police will lead the probe and coordinate with local, state, and federal law enforcement. The Miami Herald viewed and independently verified the messages. FIU President Jeanette Nunez says the school does not tolerate hate, discrimination, harassment, racism, or antisemitism. The Republican Party of Florida also condemned the comments and said it's conducting an internal review.

Her win gives Democrats a boost in one of the last electoral battles ahead of the 2026 midterms. Higgins spoke frequently in the Hispanic-majority city about Trump’s immigration crackdown, saying she has heard of many people in Miami who were worried about family members being detained. Higgins will be the first woman to lead the city of Miami. She beat Trump-backed candidate Emilio Gonzalez, a former city manager.

Federal judge halts expansion of Florida Everglades detention center

A federal judge has issued a preliminary injunction halting further expansion of an immigration detention center built in the middle of the Florida Everglades and dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” as it winds down its operations in 60 days to comply with environmental laws. Environmental groups and the Miccosukee Tribe argue the project violates environmental laws and threatens sensitive wetlands. The center, built almost two months ago, currently holds several hundred detainees but could expand to 3,000. The lawsuit claims the state and federal governments failed to comply with environmental regulations.

Florida's Supreme Court has upheld the state's current congressional redistricting map, rejecting a challenge over the elimination of a majority-Black district that was pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. The court, dominated by DeSantis appointees, said in its ruling Thursday that restoration of the district that previously united Black communities across 200 miles from Jacksonville to west of Tallahassee would amount to impermissible racial gerrymandering. That, the majority ruled, violates the Constitution’s equal protection guarantees. The decision leaves Florida's current map in place, where the GOP holds a 20-8 advantage.
