I’m writing this from Florida, as our team works alongside friends at Sanctuary of the South to support the Alligator Alcatraz legal counsel – but I had to take a pause to share this huge news.

In one week, our community has raised over $100,000 for the Alligator Alcatraz legal counsel.

We’re moved. When we first learned that we would need to raise $300,000 to support the more than 1,000 people that remained inside of Alligator Alcatraz, it was daunting – getting there felt like a moonshot, but failing to do so would have meant leaving the people that we’ve spent months building connections with behind…after they’ve already been failed by too many people.

You, and thousands of people like you, showed us hope in human form.

I’ve spent the weekend on the ground – talking to families, troubleshooting with attorneys, working through the logistics of getting legal representation to people who have none – so I know that reaching this goal isn’t just a milestone on paper. It means cases reviewed. It means petitions filed. It means people who were invisible to this system now having an attorney looking at their file.

This is a major milestone, but we are only part of the way there.

When Congressman Frost visited the facility this week, there were only 655 people left inside… down from 1,400 just weeks ago. They are being transferred out faster than we can reach them.

The legal counsel exists precisely to chase that: If someone is moved before we can get to them, our support follows. But we need the resources to make that possible.
