Reduction of endocytosis and EGFR signaling is associated with the switch from isolated to clustered apoptosis during epithelial tissue remodeling in Drosophila

Epithelial tissues undergo remodelling during development and to maintain homeostasis, and cell elimination rate must be coordinated with cell proliferation. This study shows that cell removal acceleration is associated with switching from isolated to clustered apoptosis, induced by the reduction of endocytosis and EGFR signalling.

Epithelial branching morphogenesis is an essential process in living organisms, creating organ-specific epithelial shapes. This study uses time-lapse imaging of fibroblast co-cultures with epithelial organoids or spheroids to reveal that fibroblast contact and contractility are required for epithelial branching.
