Since it was published in October 2025, this problem has become more acute and widespread as a consequence of the U.S. oil blockade, which, since January 3, 2026, has stopped virtually all petroleum shipments from reaching Cuba. The resulting fuel shortage, has, among other things, made it difficult to almost impossible for garbage trucks to operate and regularly collect trash. Because of fuel shortages, tens of thousands walked in small groups for many miles to reach these sites...

This time, international guests — 827, from 38 countries, representing 152 solidarity groups, trade unions, and political parties here to celebrate #MayDay with the Cuban people — were not merely observers but active participants.

It is profoundly symbolic: an imperial declaration issued on the very day the Cuban people publicly reaffirm their revolutionary commitment before the world.”

This is what #IsaacSaney wrote in an essay on his Facebook page on May 1.. Saney is a Cuba specialist and a professor of Black African Diaspora Studies at the Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. He is also a member of the executive board of the Canadian Network on Cuba.

In the past year, millions in the US have protested Washington’s attacks on democratic rights, #ICE terror, and imperialist war. Among them are many young people, alongside others who have never before taken to the streets.

These activists are testing strategies and tactics and debating how to push back #Trump’s march toward one-man rule. Many of the questions they face have been posed before, perhaps most notably during the anti- #VietnamWar movement in the #US in the 1960s and early ’70s.

As the #war escalated and opposition broadened, discussion flourished over how to build the movement. Debates often centered on the effectiveness of “#DirectAction,” or #CivilDisobedience, vs. mass marches and rallies, and on the demands promoted in these actions.

The Cubans were so successful in training doctors, establishing a system based on preventive care, and building infrastructure to serve the island’s population that they were able to extend selfless medical aid around the world. Cuba became known worldwide not just for its achievements in protecting the #health and extending the lives of its own people, but for saving lives in dozens of countries.

That progress is now threatened, along with the lives of the Cuban people and of others...
