Islandwide blackout hits Cuba as it struggles with energy crisis

Officials in Cuba report an islandwide blackout in the country of some 11 million people as its energy and economic crises deepen. The Ministry of Energy and Mines notes a “complete disconnection” of the country’s electrical system and says it is investigating. Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Friday warned that the island had not received oil shipments in more than three months and that it was operating on solar power, natural gas and thermoelectric plants. Cuba has blamed its woes on a U.S. energy blockade. U.S. President Donald Trump warned in January of tariffs on any country that would sell or provide oil to the island.

U.N. Votes Overwhelmingly to Denounce U.S. Embargo on Cuba as Hurricane Melissa Batters Island

The United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to condemn the U.S. embargo on Cuba for the 33rd consecutive year, with just seven opposed, including the United States, Israel and Ukraine. The vote came as Cuba was battered by Hurricane Melissa, causing widespread damage. We get an update from the eastern Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba with Liz Oliva Fernández, a reporter with Belly of the Beast, who says the U.S. embargo and other economic sanctions make it much harder for Cuba to respond to natural disasters. Nevertheless, it has a robust early warning system, detailed plans for evacuating the most vulnerable and an extensive network of government shelters. Mikael Wolfe, a historian at Stanford University, notes this system is rooted in lessons from early in the Cuban Revolution when another devastating storm killed hundreds of people across the island. The U.S. could learn much from the Cuban government when it comes to dealing with hurricanes, says Wolfe.

UN General Assembly condemns the US economic embargo of Cuba for a 32nd year98.5% of #UN members voted for lifting the embargo and only #USA and #Israel voted against it.

Clearly shows these two countries are anti-people and anti-democracy, since they don't accept the majority opinion.

Why do we need a UN, if they can't even get majority voted resolution implemented?

UN General Assembly condemns the US economic embargo of Cuba for a 32nd year

The U.N. General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to condemn the American economic embargo of Cuba for a 32nd year after its foreign minister strongly criticized the Biden administration and expressed hope a new U.S. president would end it. The vote Wednesday in the 193-member world body was 187-2 with only the United States and Israel against the resolution, and one abstention. It tied the record for support for the Caribbean nation first reached in 2019 and again last year. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez blamed the U.S. government’s “maximum pressure policy” aimed at depriving Cuba of the imported fuel it relies on for a widespread blackout this month. The U.S. pointed to political prisoners detained in Cuba.
