RNA innovators at the University of Pennsylvania report the development of new mRNA therapy that can do just that. Housed in a lipid nanoparticle, the mRNA infused directly to the lungs instructs the distant pulmonary tissues to produce proteins that repair damage from CoVid, influenza, and RSV infections. It can also be employed in the battle against lung cancer. This novel approach could yield more targeted treatments for not only pulmonary disease but also other damaged organs. Ah fuck
Saw a post suggesting the #DavidLynch #emphysema news is an example of the failure of public health in managing #COVID.
But isn't it primarily a cautionary tale of the dangers of being a lifelong smoker? He even says right in the articles that "even a cold" would be very bad for him.
I support the call in the report “Expand screening for lung cancer beyond long-time heavy smokers” (Dec 4), especially for screening of high-risk non-smokers exposed to chain second-hand smoke. Read more at straitstimes.com.
We're trying to convince Pharma there are drugs that will effect #COPD but decades of failed trails makes them very, very wary of drug development in that space.
The problem isn't the molecules, they probably have plenty of molecules that would affect COPD before it's diagnosed, it's the phenotypes they target in trials! #Emphysema is too damn late in the process for a lot of folks, probably most. Inflammation of the airways is the ticket.
#wastepickers #plastic #nairobi
Children play on their school field at James Gichuru primary school as the burning of waste metres away produces toxic smoke. Tearfund’s Maina said: ‘The air pollution from #burningplastic causes cancer, respiratory ailments such as #asthma and #emphysema, skin and eye diseases, and damage to the reproductive and nervous systems. This treaty must bring about changes for those who have suffered the effects..
Nested in this post, is an article from a digital historical source about Cleveland's history of steel production and pollution. I grew up in the #LTVsteel neighborhoods. Many of the children were born with various medical issues/complications (me and my siblings are #chronicallyIll and #disabled in some way). Mass disabling events aren't due to only pandemics of viruses. World reports under document illness and disability. I'm certain of it. #WHO is nothing to go by. Might as well be the #CDC.
So, ANYWAYS, I realized the past couple days, that my struggles with breathing and #airQuality are nothing new, I think I am just less resilient, or um... SICKER, and it's harder to roll with the proverbial punches. Seeing the kids struggling with this makes my #mentalHealth state worse.
I remember my parents telling me about my oldest brother, born in 1971, having the worst #asthma of anyone in the family. My parents didn't own a car, they had to take the RTA (busline, we called it "Rita"), no matter the weather or situation. They had to take the bus, with my asthmatic brother to the hospital, sometimes 2 times a month, due to breathing emergencies, where he would get nebulizer treatments and so on.
I realized. It was the pollution in #Cleveland. My brother was diagnosed with #emphysema in his early 30's (of course, smoking didn't help, but, he did quit about 5 years ago, I heard this thru the grapevine because he doesn't talk to me anymore). One of his kids (my niece) had an asthma diagnosis as a baby and developed #RA by age 7. #Lupus runs in my family, as does RA, #Psoriasis, #Crohns, #Celiac, and of course, #diabetes, #heartDisease and #neurological issues. We are a sick family (increasingly worse over the generations). This can all be traced to #racism and the #American caste system, #poverty, and of course, #pollution, #industrialization, #capitalism.
So anyways, here's that article:
On August 13, 1970, the Cleveland Plain Dealer provided a chilling exposé on Cleveland's deteriorating air quality. The article ruthlessly reported, "To the casual observer – the stranger to the neighborhood – it was alarming; the odor stuck in your throat; the smell made your eyes water." For those living near the heavy industrial plants in Cleveland, air pollution was more than a nuisance or an inconvenience. With every passing day, Clevelanders residing in the Broadway area to the southeast...
