"Groter risico op gordelroos bij COPD

Volwassenen met de chronische longziekte COPD hebben een verhoogd risico op gordelroos, ook wel bekend als herpes zoster.
Dat hebben onderzoekers ontdekt door 22 studies naar COPD en gordelroos samen te
voegen. Patiënten die vanwege hun COPD corticosteroïden gebruiken, lopen nog
meer kans op gordelroos.

Gordelroos ontstaat wanneer het waterpokkenvirus, dat iedereen die ooit waterpokken heeft gehad bij zich draagt, weer actief wordt. Gordelroos gaat gepaard met jeuk, pijn en vlekjes en blaasjes aan één kant van het lichaam. Meestal gaat gordelroos na ongeveer twee weken vanzelf over. Soms treden er complicaties op, zoals zenuwpijn. De kans hierop is ook groter bij COPD-patiënten.

Een vaccinatie tegen gordelroos verlaagt de kans op gordelroos en op ernstige complicaties, schrijven de onderzoekers in het tij dschrift European Respiratory Review."

Good news for those of us living with compromised lung function!

London, San Francisco and Beijing are among 19 global cities that have achieved “remarkable reductions” in air pollution, analysis has found, having slashed levels of two airway-aggravating pollutants by more than 20% since 2010.

The analysis found interventions such as cycle lanes, uptake of electric cars and restrictions on polluting vehicles had helped to drive the improvements.

Beijing and Warsaw topped the ranking for cleaning up fine particulate pollution (PM2.5), reducing levels by more than 45%, while Amsterdam and Rotterdam saw the greatest improvement in nitrogen dioxide (NO2), with cuts of more than 40%.
