When life feels heavy, I create what I think of as a little filmstrip in my mind as I’m drifting off to sleep. I fill it with images of beautiful or comforting things, letting them take the place of the day’s hurts and tomorrow’s worries.

Here is today’s frame in the filmstrip - sunset on Lake Superior. It was a superb summer night in Upper Michigan.

The Only Relationship Rule That Matters

To occupy my mind in the evenings, I’ve been watching movies that I love. Tonight it was The Big Chill (love the music!). Last night it was Dirty Dancing (love the dancing and the music!). I think tomorrow will be Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Tracy and Hepburn!).

Several years ago, when a coworker’s parent died, I told her I was sorry and admitted I didn’t know what else to say. She smiled sadly and said, “At least you said something — that’s what counts. You’ll find it’s much worse when the people you thought were close to you say nothing at all.”

I’ve never forgotten that. It taught me that silence can sometimes hurt more than awkward words. A simple acknowledgment, even clumsy, is still a gift.

These past weeks have reminded me of her words. I’m deeply thankful for the kind people on social media — many of whom don’t even know me personally — who offered empathy, encouragement, or simply shared their own beautiful posts and photos. Even without knowing the details, your kindness and presence helped lift my spirit and gave me small moments of peace in the middle of a very difficult journey.

Another frame in the filmstrip that I run through my head on difficult days and when I’m trying to fall asleep at night. This was a photo I took through the windshield of my vehicle as I drove around aimlessly in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, early in the morning a couple years ago.

It had just started to rain, but the light and colors of the trees seemed to glow, lifting my spirits. I miss those wide, tree-lined streets I’d grown so used to while living in the Midwest.
