#Science #PhD face a challenging and uncertain future
Last year, more than 45,000 students earned #doctorates in science and #engineering, about an eight-fold increase compared to 1958.
Many budding #scientists go into #graduateschool with the goal of staying in #academia and ultimately establishing their own labs. For at least 30 years, there has been talk of a mismatch between the number of doctorates and the limited academic #job openings.

Science PhDs face a challenging and uncertain future

Smaller post-grad classes are likely due to research budget cuts.

I think there is a "Overton Window" that is why so many #Doctorates can't nail down exactly what "Autism Spectrum" is, and "ADHD Spectrum", and a whole slew of related issues.

I was reading the postings on Facebook the author of this book:

"Context Blindness: Digital Technology and the Next Stage of Human Evolution (Understanding Media Ecology, 10)" – January 25, 2022
by Eva Berger (Author), Lance Strate (Series Editor)

#EvaBerger has brought #MediaEcology right into the topic of autism.

#NeilPostmanWasRight1985 "Neil Postman was Correct in year 1985" - I think the medical community / psychology industry / psychiatry industry has entirely failed to study Marshall McLuhan and Neil Postman's work.

I think that our lifestyle high in electric media content could be exposing genetic differences that have made #AutismDiagnosis a battleground between:

1. Hardware. genetics / DNA

2. Microcode. RNA Conformation / #RNAConformation / "Environmental Influences on Gene Expression"

3. Firmware. Religion, languages, education, parenting, clergy, school, wartime vs. peacetime. Oceanside vs. inland, etc, etc.

3. Software. books, television, social media, films. Acquired knowledge, experience, mentors, teachers., friends, family, parenting, marriage

The "Overton Window" of behavior, and even how a nation may behave towards autism spectrum symptoms in one time period say 1985 vs. 2025. Different nations ("When In Rome, Do as the Romans Do" metaphor), different education in the community, wartime / dictatorship vs. access go information from across the world, etc, etc, etc.

Research suggests more open access training for academics could help boost its uptake and support

Open access publishing, which allows people to read academic papers without a subscription, seems such a good idea. It means that anyone, anywhere in the world, can read the latest research without needing to pay. Academic institutions can spend less to keep their scholars up-to-date with work in their field. It also helps disseminate research, which means that […]

Thanks to a $1B donation from an alumnus, the #AlbertEinsteinCollegeOfMedicine in New York City will be completely #TuitionFree beginning in August!

Prior to this, tuition there would cost around $60,000 per year on average.

93-year-old Dr. Ruth Gottesman inherited a large sum after the death of her husband, who had been one of the early proteges of #BerkshireHathaway investments. She is a former Professor at the college, and is currently Chair of the Board.

This donation is one of the largest ever made to an educational institution.

The tears of joy in this video are awesome to see!

At a time when we need more health care workers and to bring down the cost of #HealthCare, this is a wonderful step towards both of those goals.

Seen in the wild: “All a #PhD tells me is you were at least able to cram study and pass tests.”

I can’t even.

Do people really think this? Obviously this guy does, but in general? An honest question, not a rhetorical one.

I’ve spent a significant chunk of my life in the company of people with #doctorates—including two grandparents, so I understood from childhood that getting a PhD was quite different from any other kind of degree. Most people I know haven’t, but everyone who was part of my life through my long and winding #academic career has a pretty good idea what I did to become #Doctor Dvorkin. For anyone who doesn’t know, I’m always happy to give a quick sketch.

Among people who don’t have family or friends who have done it, and have never thought seriously about doing it themselves … is that the perception, that grad school is just a more intense version of elementary school through college? More tests, more cramming, more regurgitation, and then you get some shiny new letters after your name?

If that’s the case, I guess I can’t blame them, exactly. Like I’ve said before, most people have no idea how most of the things I’ve done for a living in my life actually work. The #military, #medicine, #science: all quite mysterious except for what people think they know from movies and TV, which is often worse than complete ignorance. So I guess it’s shouldn’t be a surprise if #academia is on that list.

But I would really like to know how widespread this view is. Maybe I can do something with that.

Story of this weekend... #Doctorates don't come easily
