Linux folks, question:
I setup a common directory under `/home` (`/home/common`) with `root:common` ownership and 775 permissions. I'd like the group to be set automatically to `common` whether I write the file or someone else does, so I think using `chmod -R 2775` would achieve that. Is there a way I can similarly automatically set the ownership to `root`? Or do I manually have to do that each time I add new files/directories?

It depends on what you want to do with it.
I used to run a powerpc mac laptop ~2003 with #Debian and as long as I was running free software it worked as a charm, but as soon as I wanted to run something non-free it was not available (at the time I think it was Adobe Acrobat or some game that was alluring).
Question for Linux / Apple fans:
I'm considering buying an Apple Neo, to dual boot Linux Mint #Debian Edition on it.
Are there any specific concerns with using #Apple Silicon? Am I restricted in the #Linux distros and available packages?
I like the price point of the Apple Neo, and the fact that it comes loaded with creative tools, which I use heavily. For example, I have yet to find a #videoEditing tool for Linux, comparable to #iMovie. Also, Apple devices are elegant in #design and rugged in construction.
Am I better off buying a generic laptop instead? Recommendations are welcome!
Mijn streven is om voor thuiscomputergebruik los te komen van Amerikaanse #bigtech . Dat vind ik makkelijker gezegd dan gedaan.
Voor mijzelf lukt dat wel, beetje bij beetje: op mijn laptops met #Debian, #Vivaldi, #tuta #LibreOffice, #Signal, #Mastodon, #PixelFed, #Mistral en #nextcloud op een Nederlandse server (al is de opslagruimte beperkt). (En met Anaconda kan ik van alles uitproberen.)
Maar om deze ‘#Eurostack uit te dragen naar gezinsleden en bekenden, blijkt lastig. Een obstakel is Adobe Lightroom Classic, dat ik voor fotobewerking gebruik (het draait niet op Linux), waardoor er een Windows 11-pc aanwezig is.
Ook zien ze op tegen ‘het gedoe’ om over te stappen naar Linux en afscheid te nemen van Google, Microsoft en Meta. #Proton wordt op de een of andere manier met argwaan bekeken.
Er is wel weerzin tegen hoe deze Amerikaanse bedrijven omgaan met hun data, maar ze voelen geen urgentie. Wat wel lukt om te overtuigen: Signal in plaats van WhatsApp en Vivaldi in plaats van Google. Wat niet lukt: Linux in plaats van Windows, Tuta in plaats van Gmail, Mastodon of PixelFed in plaats van Instagram, PeerTube in plaats van YouTube.
Ik merk dat mijn aanpassingen een plateau hebben bereikt, al is er vast nog veel meer te doen: zie #european-alternatives.eu.
Herkennen sommigen van jullie het bovenstaande ?
Hebben jullie tips, of wellicht links naar websites met positieve verhalen om mijn gezinsleden en bekenden te overtuigen?
