What Makes a Good Community?

When thinking about what makes a good neighbor, I realized that it’s not just about one person – it’s about the community as a whole. A good community is comprised of kind, compassionate people who look out for one another. They’re the ones who’ll bring over a hot meal when you’re struggling to make ends meet, or offer clothes that no longer fit them to those in need. They’re the ones who’ll take your kids for a few hours, giving you a much-needed break.

In an ideal world, communities would be full of people who genuinely care about each other. We’d have houses that are always open, friends who’d bring over dinner or a bag of milk without hesitation. We’d have neighbors who’d check in on us, offer a helping hand, and provide support when needed.

The pandemic has certainly taken a toll on our sense of community. It feels like people are more isolated, more focused on their own struggles. But I believe that’s exactly when we need to come together more. I strive to be part of a community that helps others, and I wish there were more like it.

Imagine having a network of friends and neighbors who genuinely want to help, who’d be there for you in a heartbeat. That’s the kind of community I want to be part of, and I hope you’ll join me in building one. Let’s work towards creating a world where kindness, compassion, and support are the norm.

I just had a series of conversations where I learned Home Economics classes are apparently not a universal experience for my peers. I think maybe it's part of why I've had such a hard time living with folks, because I thought we all had the same education on basic life-skills, and I was the only one who gave enough of a rip to wash the dishes the right way.

I also didn't know it was considered regressive (when it was considered at all), as I thought it was part of an initiative to make sure folks knew how to do basic life-skills, regardless of gender.

This is #Privatisation by stealth. I've seen it done before. This is the very definition of gentrification. Kick out the poors and sell the land to developers.

You can call it "social" or "community" housing all you want, but it's gentrification.

If the state govt wants rid of them then they should be given a deep reno, then transferred *along with their budget* to a tenants co-operative, with management assistance by the tenants union. No "social" or "community" developers. Existing building. Proper reno. Proper budget. No evictions. No demolitions.

Seattle election results tonight: Proposition 1A appears passing (57%) community housing with progressive funding: a tax on companies with salaries over $1M. Seattle Chamber of Commerce and most of Council, Mayor, etc measure 1B appears overcome. In Seattle, it takes a few days to count all the votes, but later votes tend progressive.
