Donna Smith talked to us about dying yarn with natural dyes, and I bought 3 skeins - 2 in DK weight for a hat (undyed) and a cowl (naturally dyed from color from the lac scale insect), and one in a beautiful indigo lace weight for a lace shawl. I don’t knit much lace but I felt so inspired by the yarn itself.

I bought some 2-ply jumper weight yarn from West Lynne Wool - from the Tait family’s sheep, some Shetlands but also crosses with Cheviot and Llyen. I started making Gudrun Johnston’s Riggies Cowl (free pattern). It’s almost done, needs blocking and then seaming up the back.

#Shetland Projects / Stash - I bought more yarn in Shetland than I expected, primarily local yarns difficult or impossible to get in the US (some exceptions). I tried to stick with yarn with patterns that I intend to make rather than random stuff which I have found difficult to use (tbh I already have tons of stash that have projects in mind too but it’s better than no project). So this thread will be a recap of “what I bought in Shetland / the UK” #knitting #TextileArts #spinning #yarn (1/?)

Fiber Goals Update cont’d

For the rest of the goals - i already let those go (good tidings, finish long-term WIP) in favor of embracing where i am.

Current goals include: blocking and finishing projects; possibly making a sweater out of some beautiful Aran yarn I picked up in Shetland; getting back to spinning. I have so much fiber i want to spin - some destined for Turkish spindling, some for espinner. Getting excited again. (3/3)

Fiber Goals Update cont’d

Spin-to-Knit: technically I already completed this goal for the year but I am so happy I did *another* project all the way through - this time with the fiber I spun completely on Turkish spindles and plied on my Starling. No pics yet but will post after blocking (I already wore it during my Shetland trip)

Hexiflats: I completed two more, from Shetland yarn I bought at a local maker! https://www.paparwark.co.uk/west-lynne-wool/

West Lynne Wool – Paparwark

The Tait family have lived in Ireland Bigton since the mid 1800s all that time crofting and keeping sheep.   Brothers James & Cecil Tait are the 6th Generation of the family to work the family croft along with doing other jobs.   James is a tour guide and

Fiber Goals 2026 Update: i skipped an end-of-April update so I decided to just divorce these from months.

5+ minutes a day of fiber arts: my streak made it to 141 days in a row. Then, after flying back from Shetland, I was feeling tired, and I decided that if the time spent would feel like a chore rather than a joy, I wouldn’t do it. So I’ve been on a break the past few days. Starting to get antsy now and will be back at it soon. (1/?)

@LilPecan @JamesK Internet has been spotty and slow, even at our hotel. I have been planning a “sheep highlights reel.” Here are a few top ones. #sheep #shetland #travel #TextileArts
