Cloudy Mornings and Clear Evenings

In the past few decades, our knowledge of exoplanets has exploded, but we’re still relatively limited in what we can learn about these worlds. That’s due, in large part, to the indirect way we observe them. Most exoplanets are found when we see them transit, passing between Earth and their star. During a transit, the planet blocks a portion of the light we would otherwise detect from the star, letting us know that something’s there. We’re often able to measure the spectra of light passing through the exoplanet’s atmosphere, giving us a glimpse of chemical signatures.

Today’s study looks at exoplanet WASP-94A b, a gas giant tidally-locked so that only one side ever faces its star. In its transit, researchers could clearly measure different spectra from the morning and evening sides of the planet. The asymmetry seems to indicate that the exoplanet develops thick clouds on the nightside, which then dissipate during the daytime. (Image credit: H. Robbins/JHU; research credit: S. Thinking aloud

Follow‑up to the earlier mamma clouds: the system has now developed into a full cumulonimbus. Turbulent cloud base with ragged pannus beneath and a clear precipitation shaft in the core — a classic view of an active convective cell.

Dramatic sky spotted just now: Cumulonimbus mamma, typically hanging beneath a cumulonimbus anvil. A striking sign of nearby convective activity

Title:
Column Rising Before the Break

Description:
A towering cumulus formation pushes up the right half of the frame, backlit from behind with a warm olive glow that the dark slate sky on the left refuses to match. The color grading leans the whole image into a muted, almost monochromatic register — draining the expected drama of storm light into something quieter and more unsettled. There's a compressed quality to this kind of sky, where the atmosphere seems to be deciding something. Shot looking straight up, which removes any horizon reference and makes the scale harder to read — the cloud could be enormous or just close.

“Weitwinklig verzerrt” / Wide-angle distortion

A surreal scene at the Brooklyn waterfront a few weeks ago. Some weather phenomenon caused a straight-edged mass of clouds to vault over Manhattan and frame it in a perfect arc of clear blue sky, stretching horizon to horizon. The only way I could capture it was with a slightly distorted panorama shot (tap image for full view).
