#UMaine #TickLab - #Ticks of Maine

"There are fifteen different tick species that have been found in Maine, though not all are permanent residents. Some may arrive in the state on wildlife hosts and do not establish viable populations. Other species have thrived in Maine and are now widespread throughout much of the state. #DeTick With Duct Tape

Excerpt: "Of the 1,001 things duct tape is good for, it is a very effective way to de-tick yourself when larvae ticks climb on. With ticks, it works best to get them before they dig in and start to feed. Lint rollers also work but duct tape is stickier (and you can probably find 5 or 10 other things to use your duct tape for). Our #TickSmart Tip for August and September is to always have sticky duct tape ready just in case of a tick swarm. Duck Brand tape even comes in an appropriate lime (#Lyme) green color!"

De-Tick With Duct Tape

Late summer is when you're most likely to encounter an egg-batch's worth of larval stage deer (blacklegged) or Lone Star (seed) ticks. These six-legged larvae hatch from egg masses that can contain 3,000 or more...

So, I came across a news story about #MaineJanesTacklers -- designed by a #Maine woman, and involving velcro and sticky tape. I thought to myself, "Couldn't I just make that out of #DuckTape / #DuctTape ?" Yes, I could #DIY it (and found some articles about how to do that). But if one wants to purchase the velcro ones, MaineJane's was sold to another #Maine business -- The Predator Pee Store (and yes, I am familiar with them). They are called #StopTickWraps and can be found at the link below.

"Foggy Mountain® StopTickWraps are Wearable Velcro® Sticky Tick Traps that were originally invented by and marketed under the name MaineJane’s Tacklers by Jane Gower in #DresdenME, a small town in the mid-coast area of Maine. The area is known to have one of the highest rates of #LymeDisease in the nation and is also the area were Jane worked as a registered nurse. She has witnessed first-hand the burdens that these terrible diseases can put on patients and their families. This, combined with her experience as a #MaineGuide, motivated her to research and develop this safe, affordable, product that reduces the risk of acquiring tick borne diseases. #MaineOutdoorSolutionsLLC is very pleased to have the opportunity to purchase her product line and incorporate it in our Foggy Mountain® line of unique and useful outdoor products from Maine."

So, one of the topics for this week's #SolarPunkSunday is #ticks! I came across some interesting #DIY stuff (and more uses for #DuctTape [#DuckTape] -- which is something most #Mainahs have on hand).

Also, #MaineStateParks just announced some programs and special events. I also came across some recipes for #BlackBeans and #BlueCorn (and how to process it), making one's own #Lime and #CalciumCarbonate, and articles about #IndigenousFood and #FoodSovereignty.

And of course, some upcoming events, including #RepairCafes! I hope you'll join us and feel free to use the hashtag #SolarPunkSunday! It's all about #BuildingCommunity and #SharingIdeas!

Look what I got in the mail today!!

As millions of Americans head outside for camping trips, hiking, and backyard BBQs, billions of ticks are already waiting in the grass, ready to bite. Not only are their numbers growing, but today's ticks are more likely to carry Lyme disease bacteria and other dangerous pathogens. Is the tick and tick-borne disease situation similar globally?

Ticks Are ‘Spreading Like Wildfire’ - and More of Them Are Carrying Lyme | Newswise

Ticks are ‘spreading like wildfire’ - and more of them are carrying Lyme, according to researchers at the Tick-Borne Disease Center at Binghamton University, State University of New York.

This type of tick tweezer has a forked end that works perfect for removing ticks. The goal is to pull out the head without losing the head or squeezing disease from the tick into the bite. I've gotten way more experience with this than I'd prefer.

"Ram Raghavan started researching ticks more than 16 years ago when he learned that a 7-year-old child died from Rocky Mountain spotted fever, a tick-borne disease. His daughter was 7 years old too, and he believed – and still does – that nobody should die from a tick bite."

Tick season is bad this year. What to know and how to stay safe

Ticks are emerging earlier and staying active for longer. Experts in the central U.S. advise people to take precautions when spending time outside in wooded or grassy areas.

Finally managed to bag a Blu-ray of this cheesy classic, as it's been re-released.
I only had a VHS copy of this, as the DVD was region 1.
