I find it quite depressing. Products like this which were engineered (Swiss) to an incredibly high standard in the 1960s and will probably keep working long after anything being sold new today (Chinese) even though it's already about 50 years old.
Even the styling is still pretty chic IMHO.

And it's almost being given away because we are inured to #shinythings

[Postscript: I have my mum's one in a cupboard almost identical to this]

Using my #vintageSewingMachine today (now I've tidied my workroom enough that I'm not using it as an extra surface to store stuff on). I always enjoy seeing exactly how the bobbin winder works. And of course I like using a hundred year old (ish) machine to do the job it was designed for.

Hey all.... Does anyone have some good YT or PeerTube links or websites they could recommend for the following topics?
- Sewing Machine oiling
- Using a Sewing Machine (the basics)
- Tips on testing and using an older Sewing Machine

I have some good resources for hand-sewing, but myself and some other folks are looking to maybe get back into using a machine again.

TY!

I love my Husqvarna Viking machine but it's not great at doing automatic button holes on anything thicker than 2 layers of thin cotton, so interfaced fabric can be problematic.

So I have decided to get a second hand machine that will do just that. It's likely to be a Brother. It doesn't need to do anything else, so hopefully I'll be able to get one cheaply.

Has anyone followed this route before or do you think this is a bit extreme?

I've had fantastic visit to Regent Home of Sewing in Ilford London
I got to "test drive" some machines, got real-deal advice, and even heard a wild story about Charlie Kray.
If you're tired of soulless online shopping, this is the place to go. What you're really buying is knowledge and community. They'll cheer you on every step of the way.
It's a refreshing, authentic experience that's hard to find these days.

What would Motel the tailor think about these? A miracle!

Sewing machines then and now.

@FanCityKnits My sewing machine is a 1935 Singer featherweight electric. It was my grandmother's machine, a gift from Grandpa in the early years of their marriage. She passed it on to me when I took up sewing in my early teens, in the 1970's.

It works beautifully, and I've done all my sewing on it for decades. Never needed any other machine. I had all the electric wiring redone at one point, because the old insulation was coming off the wires. But other than that, it's all the original parts.

I posted about it once before, and that post includes a couple of pictures. It looks very similar to the picture of your machine here!

Attached: 2 images My sewing machine is the same well-loved machine I've used ever since I was a teenager, a half-century ago. The machine was already 30 years old at that point. It had belonged to my Grandma, a gift from Grandpa in the early years of their marriage, and she happily passed it along to me. It is a beautiful 1935 Singer Featherweight (picture attached). It works like a dream, despite its age. It has had all its wiring completely overhauled, because the old insulation was flaking off the wires. But otherwise, it's all original. The other members of the quilt group admire it whenever I haul it along to a quilt meeting. I still have the original instruction book and carrying case, too! The handle has broken off the case and been replaced with a rope handle, but that's okay. It's not an antique to be kept on a shelf, but has been a practical working machine all its life, a useful life which still continues. So I love the machine itself, for its practical usefulness. But I also love its long history. When I use it, I have memories of sewing projects of my youth, and also memories of Grandma, and all of her sewing history before my time, all of which makes it special. 2/ #Sewing

Hmm, that family which is cleaning out their mom's antiques apparently found *another* ancient/antique cabinet treadle sewing machine.

(the main restoration needed is not the machine -- these machines essentially last forever--, but removing 100 years of nicotine/tar residue from the cabinet, actually).

LOL was fighting one of the sewing machines last night, it just would not sew.

Cleaned it, oiled things, looked up a video on timing (checked that, looked good).

Thought to double check everything else, and last night I HAD LOADED THE NEEDLE BACKWARDS (ps. they don't work when you do this). ARGHHHHHH. (but learned my lesson).

Got the wheel replaced in my Elna finally. Its WAY smoother but ticks like a clock now. Normal? Going to check it again shortly (just lubricated it) and try again with new thread. I love old cotton wood spool thread but it always breaks so easy. #sewing #sewingmachines
