Some mornings reward patience.

During a quiet walk across the Regte Heide near Goirle/Tilburg in the Netherlands, close to the ancient burial mounds that have watched over this landscape for thousands of years, I settled down near a patch of blackberry brambles. The sun was behind me and I sat quietly in the shade, listening rather than searching.

Birdsong filled the heathland. Geese called overhead, herons moved in the distance, and the usual chorus of finches and tits surrounded the morning. Yet two songs stood outโ€”ones I couldnโ€™t quite place. So I opened the Merlin bird app. Two names appeared: Yellowhammer โ€“ Emberiza citrinella (Geelgors) and European Stonechat โ€“ Saxicola rubicola (Roodborsttapuit).

Now I had to wait.

Nearly an hour passed before the first flash of yellow appeared deep inside the thorny brambles: the Yellowhammer, perched low and partially hidden. Beautiful, but difficult to photograph through the maze of branches.

Then, suddenly, a small shape landed just above it.

The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola), perfectly visible and briefly posing as the centerpiece of the scene, while the Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella) remained tucked in the lower right of the bush. Two species, sharing the same patch of bramble for a brief moment.

Moments like this remind me that wildlife photography often rewards stillness more than movement.

Captured handheld with my Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100โ€“400mm, fully zoomed at f/6.4, 1/1000 sec, ISO 500.

Can a model trained on satellite data really find brambles on the ground? - Sadiq Jaffer

This is not a post on baking. It is a post on gardening. And I am looking for advice from gardeners who grow bramble fruit.

I have had blackberry plants (Rubus 'Illini hardy') along the garage for close to 20 years. During the first dozen years, each plant sent up multiple canes each year, and the fruit yield the following year was enough for several pies.

But in recent years, the plants (which began as three and now are five) have been sending up only one or two canes each year, and this year's yield was only enough for half of the pie recipe. I had to purchase blackberries to get to the full 4 c (1 L) needed to bake this pie.

I am aware that part of the problem is tree growth that has increased the shade by the garage. I have done some pruning to improve the amount of sunlight, but I was wondering whether there are other steps I should be taking to get the yields back to where they once were.

Any suggestions, bramble growers?

My teen and I just got back from a beautiful three and a half hour hike over at Thompson Park, a fair portion of which was spent in the shade snacking on the copious dewberries (๐˜™๐˜ถ๐˜ฃ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜ถ๐˜ด):
