Rusty Blackbirds have been declining in numbers due to habitat loss and human activity. They showed a sharp decline in our area as well, but have rebounded lately with habitat improvements. We commonly see them in flocks working along foliage at or near the waterline searching for insects. Their markings are not particularly distinct, except for the 'wild eye' and the subtle textures of tan and black in their feathers. A beautiful bird to find on a hike. Members if the Icteridae, they overwinter in our area and the SE, and nest in Canada and Alaska. They are listed as Vulnerable, and in Steep Decline.

Red-winged Blackbirds this morning. One of the most abundant birds in our area, and across North America. A flocking birds that can also be a bit of a bully a the feeder. They are year-round in our area, During nesting season, it is always nice to hear their territorial call. Male and female below.

A bit of a hiccup this morning with the latest update for Linux Mint breaking Darktable. Did some experimenting, then decided just to go to the last Timeshift restore point. Works for now, but can't ignore too many updates while things get sorted out.

Continuing on the Icteridae. we miss out on all of the Orioles except the Baltimore Oriole and the Orchard Oriole in out area. Both are frequent guests during migration, and can offer challenges in distinguishing the two.

The guides will say to use color - Baltimore is a bright orange, Orchard is a darker Chestnut. That's a tough one. I use wing bar and song. The Baltimore has a large white wing bar, where the Orchard is less pronounced.
