The diet of hummingbirds consists of a mix of nectar and insects (mostly gnats, aphids, mosquitos, but can include spiders and bees). Some of the insects are caught on the fly, some are pillaged from spider webs. Hummingbirds have a special relationship with spiders since they forage for them, used their webs as buffets, and to build nests.

Will be on hummingbirds for a while. They are a fascinating, specialized family of birds (Family Trochiidae) with 15 species in North America and 363! species overall in the Americas and Caribbean - many with very narrow ranges. 112 overall genera, again, many highly restricted, and a huge range in size from the Bee Hummingbird - the smallest bird in the world weighing in at 2 grams, to the largest the Giant Hummingbird of Patagonia, weighing in at up to 22 grams.

The US is dominated by 2 species - Ruby-throated in the east and Black-Chinned in the West and SW. Both are in the Genus Archilochus.

I have always been fascinated with them from the long ago till now - they bring joy; and the study necessary to understand them keeps me away from the news.

I have been struggling to fins some equilibrium after this horrific outflow of racism, and hate from #SKKKOTUS and the southern states. There is no place for racism in my life, in society, in science or in government. Those trying to revert back to Jim Crow are mentally ill, but cannot recognize their illness or the harm they are causing.
