You might be tickled by a charity in the UK, formerly known as "Sustrans" who have, among other things, made it their mission to turn disused rail lines into bicycle-paths & footpaths.

Walk Wheel Cycle Trust - Wikipedia

The fundamental problem with #branchLines of course is that one end is in a less important place so won't be used that much, so trains tend not to be used very efficiently. If the line continues to another city, overlapping journeys to or from both ends will give a much better coverage. This is a fundamental flaw of the #Beeching cuts, where branch lines were closed for this reason but new ones were created by cutting off connections.
The fight to bring back the Portishead Railway line to Bristol

What the return of the Portishead to Bristol train line means to those who have fought for it.

If you want to understand the UK and it's medieval attitude about money, read up on the Beeching Commission. In the early 60s the UK closed 55% of rail stations & 1/3 of rail lines, laid off 67K jobs to "save money."

This killed industries & villages & future growth of regions.

Creation of new Devon rail link takes another leap forward

There's definitely an appetite for it

Devon Live
#UK post war #townplanning was notoriously short sighted & car focussed. #glenrothes was a #newtown built in #Fife with a #railway line running through the middle. It had direct links to Kirkcaldy & Edinburgh but they never built a.station on it & removed the line 10 yrs later under #Beeching. Ultimately they built Glenrothes station in the 90s - 3.6 miles south of the town centre - in Thornton.
Now that line is a cycle path, but it still would have been better used for its original purpose.

Advent Day Seven

The Beeching Report Cuts were felt all across the UK, but Galloway has never really recovered from the loss of its train line from Dumfries to Portpatrick.
I've done a number of videos on our lost Railways, but this one about Castle Douglas is probably the best place to start!

I did a wee history video all about it, as well as a few others covering some of our lost Railways of Galloway.

Lost Railways of Galloway: Loch Skerrow Halt

YouTube

This is Loch Skerrow Halt in its heyday. One of the most remote stations in Galloway, it closed with the rest of the line because of the Beeching Report Cuts.
You can hike out to its remains from Loch Stroan, takes over an hour, but its a worthwhile journey.
