The other side of *Nepenthes veitchii* — this is the Bario "Striped" × "Green Peristome" cross, and what a contrast to its more intensely coloured cousins. Where some veitchii forms go full burgundy and gold, this one keeps things fresh and architectural: broad waxy leaves in cool blue-green, and pitchers with a subtle, understated elegance. The peristome is softer in colour but still beautifully ribbed, and that distinctive veitchii shape — wide, squat, and almost architectural — is unmistakable.

Bario is a highland plateau in Sarawak, Borneo, known for some of the most sought-after *N. veitchii* populations in cultivation. Fresh release from 2025 — this one has a lot of growing to do. 🌿

De andere kant van *Nepenthes veitchii* — dit is de Bario "Striped" × "Green Peristome" kruising, en wat een contrast met de meer intens gekleurde vormen. Waar sommige veitchii-vormen vol inzetten op bordeauxrood en goud, blijft deze fris en architecturaal: brede, wasachtige bladeren in koel blauwgroen, en bekers met een subtiele, ingetogen elegantie. De peristoom is zachter van kleur maar nog steeds prachtig geribbeld, en die kenmerkende veitchii-vorm — breed, gedrongen en bijna architecturaal — is onmiskenbaar.

Bario is een hooglandplateau in Sarawak, Borneo, bekend om een van de meest begeerde *N. veitchii*-populaties in cultuur. Verse release van 2025 — deze heeft nog veel te groeien. 🌿

i keep seeing #lithium recommended, and then subsequently unrecommended — as hype trains go, as a valuable #nutrition supplement for all kinds of things. one of those of benefits that interests to me in particular is as a supposed aid for #depression 🤷

#Bario salt is one of those things that gets brought up a lot for its lithium content… and perhaps other trace minerals when really looking at this[1], it’s just salt.

that said, in spite of its other boring composition it does have a very unique “metallic” flavour. it cooks well with sours foods and it’s main purpose in my kitchen.

what is less boring however is that we have no idea where it comes from[1] since it’s “harvested” from the #Borneo highlands. salt deposits usually don’t last too well in our insane tropical rainy climate :D

and hey, the packaging is hella cool.

My Nepenthes veitchii (Bario "Striped" x "Green Peristome") is showing off its elegant elongated pitchers with subtle coloration. This cross combines the striped characteristics from the Bario locality with the distinctive green peristome, resulting in these beautifully understated pitchers. The narrow, tubular shape is typical for this species and makes them stand out among other Nepenthes in the collection.

Mijn Nepenthes veitchii (Bario "Striped" x "Green Peristome") toont zijn elegante langwerpige bekers met subtiele kleuren. Deze kruising combineert de gestreepte kenmerken van de Bario-vindplaats met de kenmerkende groene peristoom, wat resulteert in deze prachtig ingetogen bekers. De smalle, buisvormige vorm is typisch voor deze soort en laat ze opvallen tussen andere Nepenthes in de collectie.

my haul from home this time 😋 several varieties of #Sarawak rice 🌾 and salt from #Bario 🗻

the trick to keeping weevils out of your rice is to put cloves of garlic and dried chilli in them 🌶️ this only becomes an issue if you store your rice for extended period of time 😅

anecdotal but Bario salt is said to have higher lithium content than other salts and is sometimes sold as a mend for mild depression. i wonder how true that is 😇

it’s become a little of a health fad so you can find this #Kelabit staple in the odd organic or #vegetarian store in #Kuching now. it used to be much more of a chore to get this 😅
