*Drosera patens* is one of the more striking pygmy sundews in the collection, especially when the whole pot fills up like this. The deep red colouration intensifies in bright light, making it as decorative as it is fascinating.

A single bloom standing tall among a sea of spent seed heads — *Drosera pulchella* 'Orange' knows how to steal the show. 🌸

This Australian pygmy sundew is one of my favourites in the collection. The rosettes are tiny, but what they lack in size they more than make up for in charm. The soft peachy-orange flowers appear on delicate stems, rising above the glistening, dew-covered traps below. The spent seed heads all around it are a reminder of just how freely this little plant flowers and sets seed.

Like all pygmy Drosera, it also produces gemmae — miniature vegetative buds that allow the plant to spread and multiply. A true overachiever in miniature form.

Één bloem die zich statig verheft tussen een zee van lege zaadstelen — *Drosera pulchella* 'Orange' weet hoe het de show moet stelen. 🌸

De lege zaadstelen eromheen herinneren eraan hoe royaal dit plantje bloeit en zaad zet.

Zoals alle dwerg-Drosera maakt het ook gemmae — kleine vegetatieve knopjes waarmee de plant zich kan verspreiden en vermenigvuldigen. Een echte overloper in miniformaat.

This small Australian pygmy sundew is one of those plants that never ceases to amaze me. The rosettes are barely a centimeter across, yet they produce these delicate white flowers on tall, slender stems — a striking contrast to the carnivorous traps below. Like all pygmy sundews, it uses gemmae to reproduce: tiny, lens-shaped vegetative buds that can be separated and grown into new plants.

Watching something so miniature flower so abundantly is a real treat.

Deze kleine Australische dwergzonnedauw is een van die planten die me telkens opnieuw weet te verbazen. *Nepenthes ramispina* from Gunung Ulu Kali, Malaysia. This highland species is one of the more stubborn Nepenthes in cultivation: long, branching stems, narrow leaves, and a personality that says "I'll make pitchers when I feel like it." Currently… it does not feel like it. 😅

In the meantime, the sphagnum has been completely colonised by *Utricularia* — tiny bladderworts that have turned the pot into their own little wildflower meadow, complete with delicate purple blooms. Uninvited guests, but honestly rather charming.

*N. ramispina* is endemic to the mountains of Peninsular Malaysia and is known for its distinctive branching growth habit — hence the name (*rami* = branches, *spina* = spine/thorn). Worth the wait. Probably.

*Nepenthes ramispina* van Gunung Ulu Kali, Maleisië. Deze hooglandsoort is een van de eigenwijzere Nepenthes in cultuur: lange, vertakkende stengels, smalle bladeren, en een persoonlijkheid die zegt "ik maak bekers als ík het wil." Op dit moment… wil hij dat niet. 😅

Ondertussen is het sphagnum volledig overgenomen door *Utricularia* — kleine blaasjeswortels die de pot hebben omgetoverd tot hun eigen kleine bloemenweidje, compleet met sierlijke paarse bloempjes. Ongenode gasten, maar eerlijk gezegd behoorlijk charmant.

*N. ramispina* is endemisch in de bergen van het Maleisisch Schiereiland en staat bekend om zijn kenmerkende vertakkende groeiwijze — vandaar de naam (*rami* = takken, *spina* = doorn). Het wachten is de moeite waard. Waarschijnlijk.

Small beginnings. This tiny seedling is *Nepenthes truncata* (lowland × highland) — a cross between two different elevation forms of the same species, combining the vigour of the lowland form with the slightly cooler tolerance of the highland. Still in its earliest stages, nestled in a thick carpet of mixed sphagnum, but already putting up its first proper pitcher. 🌱

*N. truncata* is one of the most impressive Nepenthes in terms of potential size — known for eventually producing pitchers capable of holding litres of digestive fluid. This one has a long journey ahead, but every giant starts somewhere.

Dit minuscule zaailing is *Nepenthes truncata* (laagland × hoogland) — een kruising tussen twee verschillende hoogte­vormen van dezelfde soort, die de groeikracht van de laaglandvorm combineert met de iets koelere tolerantie van het hoogland. Nog in de vroegste fase, genesteld in een dik tapijt van gemengd sphagnum, maar al bezig met zijn eerste echte bekertje. 🌱

*N. truncata* is een van de indrukwekkendste Nepenthes qua potentiële omvang — bekend om uiteindelijk bekers te maken die liters spijsverteringsvloeistof kunnen bevatten. Dit exemplaar heeft een lange weg te gaan, maar elke reus begint ergens.

The other side of *Nepenthes veitchii* — this is the Bario "Striped" × "Green Peristome" cross, and what a contrast to its more intensely coloured cousins. Where some veitchii forms go full burgundy and gold, this one keeps things fresh and architectural: broad waxy leaves in cool blue-green, and pitchers with a subtle, understated elegance. The peristome is softer in colour but still beautifully ribbed, and that distinctive veitchii shape — wide, squat, and almost architectural — is unmistakable.

Bario is a highland plateau in Sarawak, Borneo, known for some of the most sought-after *N. veitchii* populations in cultivation. Fresh release from 2025 — this one has a lot of growing to do. 🌿

This popular hybrid (*N. ampullaria × N. ventricosa*) combines the compact, upright pitchers of *N. ventricosa* with the rich coloration that both parents can express under good light. The result is a fast-growing, easy-care plant that absolutely earns its dramatic name. A perfect beginner's Nepenthes — and a permanent favourite for anyone who grows them.

A classic for good reason — *Nepenthes rafflesiana*. One of the most widespread lowland species across Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, and one that has fascinated botanists since it was first described in 1824, named in honour of Sir Stamford Raffles.

What I love about this species is the variety: every plant can look slightly different, with pitchers ranging from pale green-yellow to heavily mottled brown and red. The wide, squat lower pitchers and more elongated upper pitchers give the plant two very different looks as it matures. This one is still developing its character — and I'm enjoying every step of the journey. 🌿

A highland hybrid with character: *Nepenthes singalana × ventricosa*. The influence of both parents is clear — the long, sword-like leaves trace back to *N. singalana* from the mountains of Sumatra, while the deep burgundy, barrel-shaped pitchers are unmistakably *ventricosa*. Together they make for a plant that's vigorous, compact, and produces pitchers with a rich, almost wine-dark colour that deepens beautifully with good light.

Both parent species thrive in cool highland conditions, and this hybrid is equally at home in an intermediate to cool environment. A reliable grower and a beautiful one. 🌿

De invloed van beide ouders is duidelijk zichtbaar — de lange, zwaardvormige bladeren komen van *N. singalana* uit de bergen van Sumatra, terwijl de diepe bordeauxrode, tonvormige bekers onmiskenbaar *ventricosa* zijn. Samen vormen ze een plant die krachtig en compact groeit, met bekers in een rijke, bijna wijnrode kleur die mooier wordt naarmate er meer licht is.

Beide oudersoorten gedijen in koele hooglandcondities, en deze hybride is even thuis in een intermediaire tot koele omgeving. Een betrouwbare groeier én een mooie. 🌿

Tiny pitchers, big personality. My *Nepenthes ampullaria* is still young, but those little round buds are already full of promise. Unlike most Nepenthes, *N. ampullaria* is a detritivore at heart — its squat, flask-shaped pitchers are designed less for catching insects and more for collecting fallen leaf litter from the forest floor above. Nutrients from decomposing leaves, not bugs. Nature is endlessly creative. 🍂

This species is widespread across Borneo, Sumatra, and the Malay Peninsula, and comes in a huge range of colour forms — from plain green to deep red and spotted "Harlequin" types. Can't wait to see which form this one turns out to be as it matures.

Anders dan de meeste Nepenthes is *N. ampullaria* van nature een detritivoor — haar gedrongen, fles­vormige bekers zijn minder bedoeld om insecten te vangen en meer om gevallen bladeren van de bosbodem te verzamelen. Voeding uit rottende bladeren in plaats van insecten. De natuur is eindeloos creatief. 🍂

Deze soort komt wijd verspreid voor op Borneo, Sumatra en het Maleisisch Schiereiland, en bestaat in een enorme variatie aan kleurvormen — van gewoon groen tot diep rood en gevlekte "Harlequin"-types. Ik ben benieuwd welke vorm dit exemplaar blijkt te zijn naarmate het groeit.
