A bit of tooth: first, Nepenthes diatas, a Sumatran species that should get more attention than it does for its deep red traps and stripey toothy peristome. Tooth density and length rivals villosa even, though the rib size doesn’t.
And then two close relatives, both awaiting a repot here: N. hamata and nigra.

Nepenthes northiana is a legendary plant both for size and color; unfortunately, it also tends to be picky (mine hasn’t changed sizes in quite a while, though partly my fault). Hybrids though, are a way of harnessing those looks and sizes while having something a lot easier to deal with…and these two might be among the best. northiana x veitchii “Candy Dreams” has all the stripes, all the pink, and all the vigor, and northiana x truncata, has started showing that characteristic stretched mouth and ruffled peristome while also promising the giant proportions of the father added in.

A future giant in the making: Nepenthes rajah x attenboroughii. Only just reaching the size where traits of both parents can really be seen, but right now it’s also demonstrating that while most carnivores can skate by without feeding much…many will absolutely grow better and faster with proper fertilizing. Those two new leaves were after a small osmocote pellet was thrown in a trap, and they’re significantly bigger than the previous ones. So’s the newest pitcher.

The Songdog’s back, and he’s helping showcase two very closely related species that got filmed for upcoming videos: Nepenthes copelandii and cornuta! Both are endemic to Mindanao and part of the alata complex, but unlike most of their relatives their upper pitchers are completely differently shaped from the lowers. These two also have kind of swapped sizes; copelandii ends up with big lowers and much smaller uppers, while cornuta has smaller lowers but pretty sizable uppers.

Nepenthes ‘Helen’ x spectabilis PB, HC A with new lower pitchers.
This clone routinely makes chunky lowers with moderately flared and ruffled peristomes, and has nice high contrast when it first opens but the real show comes as it ages, when the peristome stripes turn black but so does the edge of the lip, fading to red and yellow inward. And, it’s a known fertile female (though sometimes picky about making good seeds; they occasionally just make wacky mutated pods instead).
There’s one rooted cutting left on the website Shop too…maybe with a second to be added once it starts growing out.

*Nepenthes ramispina* from Gunung Ulu Kali, Malaysia. This highland species is one of the more stubborn Nepenthes in cultivation: long, branching stems, narrow leaves, and a personality that says "I'll make pitchers when I feel like it." Currently… it does not feel like it. 😅

In the meantime, the sphagnum has been completely colonised by *Utricularia* — tiny bladderworts that have turned the pot into their own little wildflower meadow, complete with delicate purple blooms. Uninvited guests, but honestly rather charming.

*N. ramispina* is endemic to the mountains of Peninsular Malaysia and is known for its distinctive branching growth habit — hence the name (*rami* = branches, *spina* = spine/thorn). Worth the wait. Probably.

Ondertussen is het sphagnum volledig overgenomen door *Utricularia* — kleine blaasjeswortels die de pot hebben omgetoverd tot hun eigen kleine bloemenweidje, compleet met sierlijke paarse bloempjes. Ongenode gasten, maar eerlijk gezegd behoorlijk charmant.

*N. ramispina* is endemisch in de bergen van het Maleisisch Schiereiland en staat bekend om zijn kenmerkende vertakkende groeiwijze — vandaar de naam (*rami* = takken, *spina* = doorn). Het wachten is de moeite waard. Waarschijnlijk.
