May 24, 1983, 43 years ago today: The morning mists eventually gave way to a pleasant day. I began the hike with five non-stop miles over Walnut Mountain, up Bluff Mountain, and down the other side.

In the West Salmon Mountains of Trinity Alps Wilderness, day 2 followed better trail, as we headed up to Horse Ridge Trail along Horse Trail Ridge, tagging Trinity Summit (Guard Station) and North Trinity Mountain along the way. It hardly ever lost us!

This was just an overnight, but not a quick one, in the West Salmon Mountains of Trinity Alps Wilderness.

Day 1 was winding along Crogan Hole Trail before finding a way roughly along McKay Meadows and Tish Tang Ridge Trails, which could be in better shape.

May 23, 1983, 43 years ago today: The trail finally leveled out near the crest of Max Patch Mountain, soon coming out upon the gravel Max Patch Road, which it would follow for the next four miles.

May 23, 1983, 43 years ago today: My first climb in the Bald Mountains, the state line range just northeast of the Smokies, was long and steep. Nevertheless, the bright, crisp morning was like rocket fuel to two sunshine-starved backpackers fresh from the sensory-deprivation tanks.

@sinabhfuil take a look at products made from Alpha Direct. It's a synthetic material. I have a hoodie made by Farpointe from the 90gsm weight, and it is amazingly warm, cozy, light and takes minimal space. Never smells bad, dries quickly. An Alpha Direct layer plus a lightweight shell (Patagonia Houdini, in my case) is very effective at keeping me warm and dry. Garage Grown Gear sells AD protects made by small makers.

I also have some down stuff as well. The Marmot Ghost Whisperer jacket and pants have been very useful to me. I was patient and found one on sale, and the other lightly used on eBay. They are pricey. Abd I have a 20-year-old Patagonia Nano Puff jacket with his that has synthetic, down-like filling that has been just amazingly good. Packs down into a minimal football. I bought it and the Houdini shell used, just as Yvon advises, and I've patched it.

Experienced travellers, a question: how do you bring warm stuff that packs down small? I brought two big jumpers - one for over pyjamas after getting sick in a glacial apartment last year - and my bag needed a camel to carry it, and a trip that started 8ยฐ and ended 30ยฐ a week later was murder to pack for

@zeank

When you use power banks on the trail you have to charge just enough.

While your phone is plugged into the power bank your phone runs at full power thinking it has unlimited wall power. If you plug your phone into your bank and leave it overnight your phone will suck down the power all night long.

I charge my phone starting at dinner time to about %85-95 then unplug it. I may read or watch a movie then I turn it off until morning.
