Launched to Reduce Cancer-Linked Atrazine Pollution in Thousands of U.S. Waterways, Drinking-Water Supplies

Conservation and public health groups filed a formal notice with Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin today to force the agency to develop water-quality standards for atrazine, a cancer-linked pesticide that has been found at dangerous levels in thousands of U.S. waterways and in drinking-water supplies. The notice comes ten days after the Trump U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released its finalized review of atrazine, concluding that the potent endocrine disruptor does not pose an extinction risk to any threatened or endangered animals or plants. This contrasts sharply with the EPA’s 2021 finding that widespread atrazine pollution is harming more than 1,000 threatened and endangered species.

1. TrumpRX: “I think outside of maybe a cure itself it’s the biggest thing to happen to everything having to do with medical in any... in any way shape or form.”

2. The (now so-called) Environmental Protection Agency approved atrazine, a carcinogenic weedkiller banned in >60 countries.

3. In the midst of an international Ebola outbreak, the NIH has been ordered to stop all Ebola research.

Trump Administration Fails to Protect Endangered Wildlife From Atrazine

The Trump U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has finalized a review of atrazine that concludes the potent, cancer-linked endocrine disruptor does not pose an extinction risk to any threatened or endangered animals or plants. The court-ordered final review, which came in response to a legal challenge by the Center for Biological Diversity, was released to the Center late Friday afternoon. The controversial finding contrasts sharply with a 2021 Environmental Protection Agency determination that the pesticide is likely to harm more than 1,000 protected species. The new finding comes despite widespread atrazine contamination of the nation’s waterways caused by tens of millions of pounds of the pesticide being used each year in industrial agricultural operations.

A Month After #Trump Doubles Down on #Atrazine, #WHO Dubs It ‘Probably #Carcinogenic to Humans’

“It is outrageously irresponsible that we still allow use of this dangerous #poison in the United States,” said the Center for Biological Diversity’s environmental health science director.

"Just a month after the Trump administration doubled down on the alleged safety of atrazine, a United Nations agency said on Friday that the pesticide—which is banned by dozens of countries but commonly used on #corn, #sugarcane, and #sorghum in the United States—probably causes #cancer.

" 'It is outrageously irresponsible that we still allow use of this dangerous poison in the United States,' said Nathan Donley, the Center for Biological Diversity’s environmental health science director, in a Friday statement. 'This finding is just the latest indictment of the industry-controlled US #pesticide oversight process that is failing to protect people and #wildlife from chemicals linked to numerous health harms.' Breaking down the use of #glyphosate in the U.S.

by Pam Dempsey, #InvestigateMidwest May 26, 2019

"#Glyphosate is the most used #pesticide on U.S. agricultural crops, with the nation using an estimated 287 million pounds in 2016, according to an analysis by the Midwest Center for Investigative Reporting.

"And sales continue to grow, with market researchers predicting the glyphosate market to grow to $8.5 billion to $10 billion annually by 2021 up from $5 billion now.

"Of 400 pesticides used on agriculture crops across the U.S, glyphosate is used at least three times more than all others, according to an analysis of data estimates from the U.S. Geological Survey.

"The second-most used weed killer in the U.S. is #atrazine – with 75.4 million pounds used on U.S. agriculture crops in 2016.

"In 2016, the #Midwest used 65 percent of the nation’s total agriculture glyphosate use on crops. The U.S. Census defines the Midwest as a 12-state area including: #Illinois, #Indiana, #Iowa, #Kansas, #Michigan, #Minnesota, #Missouri, #Nebraska, #NorthDakota, #Ohio, #SouthDakota, and #Wisconsin.

"All total – the Midwest used 188.7 million pounds of glyphosate on crops and cropland in 2016 – up from 4.6 million pounds in 1992."

WHO’s Cancer Research Arm Finds Atrazine Is Probable Human Carcinogen

The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer found today that atrazine, the second most widely used pesticide in the United States, is “probably carcinogenic to humans.” The cancer designation was determined by a working group of 22 expert cancer researchers from 12 different countries. The researchers identified evidence from human epidemiological studies, animal studies, and laboratory assessments of whether atrazine exhibits key characteristics of a carcinogen, like DNA damage and oxidative stress.

Center for Biological Diversity
Atrazine, an endocrine-disrupting herbicide banned in Europe, is widely used in the U.S.

Atrazine has been banned in Europe since 2004, but it is the second-most widely used weed killer in the United States. A significant body of research suggests it is an endocrine disruptor. It is also linked to various cancers, premature birth and more.

U.S. Right to Know

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services released its assessment of the dangerous pesticide atrazine. They found that atrazine does not pose an extinction risk to a single protected animal or plant species that was evaluated, despite a mountain of evidence demonstrating atrazine’s toxicity.

We need supporters to comment on FWS’s biological opinion for atrazine and highlight the dangers and inconsistencies with their assessment.
