Teaching Writing in the Age of AI: Talking About Academic Integrity

This is the second post in a series about Teaching Writing in the Age of AI. In the first post, I wrote broadly about academic integrity and how to create assignments which can work with and in opposition to AI like ChatGPT. In this video post, I discuss how to talk about academic integrity with your students. https://videopress.com/v/vzbU1IIo?resizeToParent=true&cover=true&preloadContent=metadata&useAverageColor=true I've turned my previous post - Practical Strategies for ChatGPT in […]

#Constituents always assume the close. Don't call them #voter. They're yours already. Okay that's done. They get to #play in the #app also because you give them #assignments starting now. What Ohio State students need to know about Senate Bill 1

Senate Bill 1 has caused a handful of changes affecting the daily lives of students at Ohio State.  SB 1, a bill that bans diversity, equity and inclusion programming and faculty striking, limits the teaching of controversial subjects and requires course syllabi to be public online, was passed on Mar. 25. The Lantern

"The pedagogical value of a writing assignment doesn’t lie in the tangible product of the work — the paper that gets handed in at the assignment’s end. It lies in the work itself: the critical reading of source materials, the synthesis of evidence and ideas, the formulation of a thesis and an argument, and the expression of thought in a coherent piece of writing. The paper is a proxy that the instructor uses to evaluate the success of the work the student has done — the work of learning. Once graded and returned to the student, the paper can be thrown away."

Picked up "Wicked Arts Assignments" last weekend, and it's been sitting beside me most of the week. There's an interesting foreword about assignment as artwork, with a digression into Fluxus instructions-as-art. (Fluxus by the way seems to be having a moment again, with at least one group at the Berlin Jazz Festival doing it.) It's a group work collection from around the world of interesting #art #assignments, which really are instructions-as-art. Page of words, page of photos. #Gishwhes vibes.
