I have the priviledge of taking a whole semester for my research this fall, and intend to blog / think out loud as I work my way through #Pedagogy, #Philosophy, #Art, #Filmmaking, #ExperientialLearning, #4ECognition, and a host of other topics — yes, including some thoughts on #AI and how it effects creativity, imagination, and human agency.

I think I’ll gather the whole thing under the hashtag #ArtsPedagogy, as that is the main thrust of my research.

Thinking out loud v.01 – fredsnotes

I was trying to post this on my blog, but it seems to be not cooperating these days… So here comes a long thread on #Pedagogy, #FineArtsEducation, #4ECognition, #Phenomenology, #Dewey, and #Vygotsky

I have a feeling there will be several of these…

This fall term I will be on a research leave. I am temporarily (and voluntarily!) relieved of all my regular duties in order to spend time doing research — the research I would normally do in my free time, in the moments between meetings, on the weekends… Suddenly that is my main job; I’m not quite sure how I’ll respond once the term starts again, but I’ll do my best to manage.

And what will I be researching? A couple of things: (1/5)

My latest work “Zero-shot counting with a dual-stream neural network model” is now published in Neuron. We present evidence for an enactive theory of the role of posterior parietal cortex in visual scene understanding and structure learning. Like the primate brain, our model apprehends a visual scene via a sequence of foveated glimpses. Both glimpse contents and glimpse locations are fed into our model, enabling the model to learn abstractions that are grounded in action (here, eye movements) rather than merely in the sensory domain. We show that this architecture enables zero-shot generalization of a previously learned structure (numerosity) to new objects in new contexts in a setting where a vanilla CNN fails to generalize. Our model also replicates several signatures of (the development of) human counting behaviour and learns representations that mimic neural codes for space and number in the primate brain.

To understand a visual scene, observers need to both recognize objects and encode relational structure. For example, a scene comprising three apples r…

Just got word today that the Norwegian film industry magazine Rush Print will run my essay on AI, film, and imagination sometime within the next week or so. I pretty pleased as that’ll reach pretty much everyone working and interested in film in this country.

I’ve been considering translating it to English when I have the time, but posting the Norwegian version here in the mean time.

Om kunstig intelligens, film og fantasi – fredsnotes

I come to #posthumanism from a science background, via #permaculture > #timothymorton > #francescaferrando . I think I’m doing it backwards, because only now am I diving into #literarure , #history , #religion , and the rest of the #humanities . It seems that many folx come to PH from a #humanities background.
I’m now discovering a whole slew of things I never knew existed! And finding that a whole bunch of people are studying the things I thought I was the alone in thinking about… so exciting!

#4Ecognition , #cognition, #panpsychism , #digitalhumanities ,
#cognitivenarratology , #consciousness, #reality , #newmaterialisms , #dualism , #phenomenology, #autoethnography , #metaphysics , #ursulaleguin , #krishnamurti where have you been all my life?

@nickbrancazio Hi! I ran into your account when I did a search for #4Ecognition (which I recently learned about from @MerjaPolvinen ). I resonate with some of your posts and am super curious about your work of bringing philosophy to primary schools. That sounds amazing and intriguing! What does that look like? Would you be willing to share just a bit about your work in that realm?
@MerjaPolvinen Great to meet you too! Yes, I had no idea what I was diving into when I chose to study the “self!” Before this recent research, I didn’t even really identify with having a “self;” now it turns out there’s a whole new side of being alive that I’m coming to terms with. My research continues. As for #4Ecognition , wow! I did a super brief google search and definitely want to dive into this further! I’m pretty sure this is right up my alley, so thank you! Is there a connection between 4E and #posthumanism that you’ve found? From the very brief google search, it seems like there may be some potential intersection? Just was wondering your take on that. Thank you again for the tip, and for the recommendation to look into Gallagher and Zahavi!
@fgraver Hi! I ran into your account when I did a hashtag search for #4ECognition . Your intro talks about experiential education, which is something I’ve spent a lot of time studying and thinking about. I’m over in the US studying Posthumanism for my masters degree, and have been thinking a lot about what it would look like to go into academia as a professor. I know that one responsibility of that position is to teach. My undergrad degree was largely focused on studying experiential education and various models and best practices. It feels like an art form to me. I wonder if/how/when experiential education can be utilized in academia. #francescaferrando talks about Posthuman education in academia, and from my perspective, experiential education can’t be left out of that.
Anyway, I wanted to reach out and say hi! I’d love to hear a bit about your work in experiential and situated learning, and anything else you’d like to share! I’m specifically curious about situated learning!
