Empowering everyone to build reliable and efficient software.

Golang is unusual because in most languages the type system tells you when you made a mistake, but in Golang the type system tells you when Rob Pike made a mistake.

"Why bother writing free software if nobody's going to use it" why bother producing art or documenting the life cycle of an extinct insect or sharing anything that you find interesting or fun - if people find something I've done useful then wonderful, but even if they don't I want to be able to share it with them

Why does Zoom have an office building??

@sjvn

Bet they all use MS Teams ๐Ÿ™‚

@sjvn ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ
@sjvn To sit in an office and have Zoom meetings locally. To save cloud costs
@sjvn To store the agendas and minutes.
Zoom orders workers back to the office

The company says staff living near offices should work in person at least twice a week.

@__michaelg @sjvn i am impressed by your profile pic. does this effect have a name?
@utf_7 it looks like a halftone effect but with the dots a bit chaotic. correct me if i'm wrong, @__michaelg
@sjvn background pictures studio
@sjvn are you sure it's not just a virtual background? Run in front of it and see if it your head goes all wavy.
@sjvn Because they zoomed to work by using cars that go zoom.

@sjvn

๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿ˜† ๐Ÿ˜‚

@sjvn Office real estate was an investment once.
@sjvn I laught more then I should have. Thank you!
Enjoy your day. I sure will do from now on. ๐Ÿ˜˜
@sjvn @binford2k wasn't that also one of the buildings that reflected and focused light creating damage on some property next to it?
@nils_ballmann @sjvn @binford2k probably. Luckily itโ€™s just an AT&T parking lot across the street and a bunch of dead offices beyond.
@nils_ballmann @sjvn @binford2k yeah! I've worked at the building next door. You could see the burn makes in the grass in summer.
@sjvn The same reason OpenAI doesn't hire people who use LLMs for their work.
@sjvn why not ๐Ÿ˜‚
@sjvn Because the Hellish lair of eternal agony had become intolerably expensive to maintain.

@sjvn

Looks like a parabolic attenna to me.

@sjvn

Gotta hide the servers for the "AI", and the storage for all the logged personal information somewhere...

@admin @sjvn tbh a big building with their name on it sounds like a bad place for hiding things

@raphaelmorgan

Best way to hide something is in plain sight.

@sjvn

@sjvn

Off topic, but you reminded me of the Otis Elevator company building in Winnipeg which only has one floor.

@corvus @sjvn

do they have a basement?

@soonix @sjvn
You probably walk right into an elevator from the front door and then down 10 floors to the executive bunker.
@sjvn the funniest thing is, in staff meetings they all move their mouths silently until someone says "you're on mute!"
@sjvn Worse, they ordered everyone back to the office.
@sjvn the dealer should never use his own stuff ๐Ÿ˜
@sjvn "Why does Zoom have an office building??" Good question!
@sjvn genuinely Zoom has, somehow, been one of the big companies to really push return to office hsrd
I don't think the irony is lost on anyone

@darkphoenix @sjvn I once got contacted by a recruiter of them because they were setting up a new team in Germany. They were pretty insistent that I'd have to leave my family behind and move 500km to the other end of Germany to work with them.

Obviously we didn't made it to any actual interviews. I like working for companies who believe in their product.

@sjvn Where else should their managers order them back to work at againโ€ฝ
@sjvn Thatโ€™s where the Architect lives
@sjvn They lobbied all the right people during Covid?
@sjvn A fair question, in the same genre as Why did Kamakaze pilots wear helmets, and How do they stick Teflon to frying pans ๐Ÿ˜†
@sjvn
lmao so true ๐Ÿ˜‚

@sjvn

I remember visiting Polycom once for a demonstration on their technology. This was long before Zoom, WebEx, and the rest of those type of options existed. Our goal was to have video conferencing with our organization, that was spread out all over the US and abroad.

A group of us went to their headquarters. I remember it being a large building in Silicon Valley.

Upon waking in, we noticed there was NO ONE there.

I'm not kidding. It was empty room after empty room.

There was sign directing up to a conference room, where after we arrived, we received a demonstration on the technology from one of their other locations. ๐Ÿ™‚

I will never forget that experience.

@sjvn I've been in startups about to lose their shirts and in need of foreign investment who leased a sexy new building to somehow impress venture capitalists.

It makes you look like you waste money.

Given the structure of our federal government now, Zoom is probably in charge of the war planning. Who needs the Pentagon when you can buy a giant parabolic mirror of glass?

I wonder how many cars in the parking lot it has melted.

@sjvn Hey! Some of us need an office to go to each day because if we did work from home our partners would get so annoyed they would murder us! ๐Ÿ˜‚

@sjvn why does any company have an office building?

@citizenk4te

@sjvn How else can you demand that everyone returns to the office. It's a "must have" for upper management.
