The word is derived from Latin and means 'left'. It has a twin "dexter" from which we get dexterous and dexterity; both positive traits.
Over the years the word was attached to that odd and troubling group, the left handed. Since left handers were clearly evil, "sinister" took on a new meaning.
We, as a society have been oppressing left handed people for thousands of years. Don't believe me? Try using a left handed keyboard or ruler.
