An Israeli court overturned the conviction of officer Yitzhak Sofer, who assaulted Palestinian journalist Mustafa Alkharouf in East Jerusalem in December 2023, citing that Sofer suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) due to his service during the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation.

Although video footage clearly showed Sofer beating and kicking Alkharouf, who required hospitalization, the Jerusalem Magistrate Court replaced his initial conviction with 300 hours of community service.

The judge emphasized Sofer’s clean record and long service, arguing that maintaining the conviction could cause disproportionate harm.

The ruling comes amid a sharp rise in attacks and arrests of journalists in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, with Reporters Without Borders labeling Israel “the worst enemy of journalists.”

Yehezkeli, a settler in the occupied West Bank, is scheduled to speak at events in #Sydney and #Melbourne in March. The Jewish groups’ letter emphasizes his role in normalizing genocidal rhetoric amid Israel’s ongoing assault on Gaza. Tony Burke indicated the visa is under review, noting it’s unusual for someone to advertise a speaking tour before securing a visa.
