US universities are great bang-for-the-taxpayer dollar in terms of improving health, tech, and the economy.

US government grants to private companies (e.g., defense contractors) are often about 50% or more in indirects. By contrast, universities typically charge < 25% in indirects. Plus it has been declining even in just the past 15 years.

Got a letter in The Economist on the skill of public speaking. Does this count as a publication?

Are there any fans of my art out there who are Scientists or SciComm folks? Would you like me to attempt an abstract representation of your specialty with art, in one of my daily drawings?

Why would I do this? We all need a little joy in these times, and the inspiration may help me get unstuck from my comfort patterns.

My background is mostly in Molecular Biology and Biochem, but I love learning about new fields.

Well, Oxford University Press is officially the worst.

They want the complete copyright bundle. In return, they graciously will allow me to post 25% of the pre-publication version my chapter on an institutional repository following a 12-month embargo period.

(I am waiting to hear whether they'll want me to translate into Etruscan first to ensure it doesn't get pirated.)

They will send me no pdf version, just ONE book.

Chia-Hsuan Hsu waited 18 months before chasing an editor for a decision on a paper. The answer surprised him.

A lab member sent this photo of an ongoing situation around the back of the Medical School.

So many questions…
