Interested in #solar #wind #solarpunk and actually building small solar systems.
@smallsolar @ai6yr I constantly look for a photocell timer that is 12V. I am currently using one designed for pond lighting. It was 32 $USD and still working as installed 11 months ago. I always assumed I would need to use a heavy duty automotive relay for bigger draws.
Plastic dinosaurs are real dinosaurs

#Random #electronics question...

Anyone have a recommendation for a good, 12V based timer with relay on/off (with some current handling)? I could design one (Arduino and relays, RTC), but prefer something with some robust packaging.... Would like to turn things on and off automatically on a 12V battery system. Doesn't need fancy scheduling (actually preferable to not have too much external requirements).

Use case: turn on a remote switch and/or supply to an inverter automatically on a schedule.

@ai6yr while I don't have an answer I've been thinking about designing a kit for exactly this, it feels like something lots of hobbyist solar punk-esque people would be interested in having.
Even a simple relay with a adjustable timer would be a valuable thing to have in your toolkit

Hello fediverse solarpunks! We’re Solarpunk Presents Podcast, a podcast run on a shoestring budget by two lady solarpunks, one in Canada (@arielkroon) and one in Germany (@xtinadr@wandering.shop). We’re not great with technology, but we happen to both be PhDs from the opposite sides of the spectrum between STEM and Humanities/the Arts, and we’re united in our working towards solarpunk futures.

Our podcast is an interview-style podcast where we talk to guests and each other about various aspects of solarpunk, renewable energies, political action, and more. Often, our guests are people who wouldn’t label themselves as solarpunks, but are (and have been, often for years) quietly involved in working towards making the world a better place to live in. We strongly believe that once you get past the aesthetic and hype about renewables, solarpunk at its core promotes compassion, kinship with non-humans and humans alike, and grace for our fellow human beings as we all work together to survive on our shared planet.

You can support the podcast on Patreon, with tiers starting at just $1 USD! We host a monthly solarpunk hangout that all of our patrons are invited to, and all Patrons at the $3 tier and up receive early access to our episodes. There are more tiers with more extras, so head to https://patreon.com/solarpunkpresents to see them all. We also take one-time or recurring donations over at our PayPal: https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=4QYBB8LGBC6FS
Even if you’re not in the financial position to donate, we really value other forms of support, such as positive reviews on your podcatcher of choice (it helps us be more visible and reach more solarpunks!), or subscriptions to our YouTube channel and comments there. As writers, we thrive on feedback, and we are continually trying to make the podcast better and want to know what you think.

As I’ve said before, it's rough out there for anyone valuing the environment, social justice, compassion, and more, and we want to keep doing our part to keep hope alive. We want to broaden the imagination of what it's possible to do to contribute to a better world, no matter who you are, where you live, or what life stage you're at.

@ge0rg fastboot? For FB
@ge0rg the pads at the top of the PCB from the rear view look interesting, looks like a Rx label, perhaps a debug UART?

hi #permacomputers, #hackers, #bricoleurs

Starting to tinker with old/disused smartphones to self-host. However, upon buying a couple second-hand phones, I'm often faced with Google's FRP protection: you can only use the phone by connecting to the previous owner's google account. Factory reset doesn't solve this.
Do you have any trustworthy resources on bypassing this? terminal tools? forums?
Seems essentials to increase phone's lifespan.

thankssss

@vapaad while I suspect in the US its the most extreme I think you'd find similar experiences in the UK and most of western Europe. In the UK the tuition fees are going up so it's creating a new class system (or extending the old one) of those who need help and those who don't

Pretending I have a 4mm thick e-Ink Macintosh Plus.

#Macintosh #RetroComputing #Emulator

It's even nicer rotated. The Mac display in this orientation measures 8 inches diagonally. This feels pretty close to the visible area of an actual 9 inch CRT.

@wezm an e-ink display classic mac would go so hard
@wezm I wonder if you could emulate one of the doorstop macs that could handle an extra display card, and get the equivalent of the old macintosh portrait display.
@wezm Looking sharp! Native or using the BOOX as a monitor?
@tommythorn native via mini vMac Android app
@wezm But... how?
Mini vMac - Apps on Google Play

A fully functional Mac Plus emulator for the Android platform.

@wezm Very lovely! I wasn't aware you can install apps on the boox.
@n2o yeah it's got full Play Store support
@wezm this black and white ui looks gorgeous on eink!

@wezm Looking georgeous!

And now?

@wezm I'd love an ePaper or eInk laptop and if it can sport the old classic B/W MacOS vibe then it'll be even better.
@wezm just needs some Snow White design language and 👌
@wezm telling my kids this was the Apple Newton
@wezm That could work on my DC-1 (daylight computing) tablet.
@doekman oh wow that thing looks amazing. Does the display update as quickly as it does on their website? If so, that's super cool.
@wezm Yes, is does. Display is amazing, but Android is a steep learning curve…
@doekman I switched to an Android phone after iPhones since the 3G, it's weird and annoying at first but you get used to it. Plus I'm pleased every time I side load an app, or install an open-source one through F-Droid.
