Just noticed this instance is missing my commemorative toot!

I managed to fully restore an Italian Macintosh Classic! (And convert it from 240 to 127v)

The 30yr+ original SCSI disk is still alive and kicking too! Just need to service the floppy drive and figure out how to stabilise the display.

The poor thing was in bad shape. Lots of caps leaked and corroded the analog board and even the chassis! A few others on the motherboard, but nothing as bad as the AB. It was soooooo dirty when it arrived too. It was a surprise to boot it and see a "Benvenuto in Macintosh."

Beautiful machine. Happy to have a little piece of history here. Oh! The old SCSI drive was imaged and safely stored, thanks to BlueSCSI. <3

Discus – Obsolete Thor

here’s an obscure bit of software preservation that has been completely forgotten:

i learned recently that back in the late 90s in North America, Kellogg’s partnered with MS to cross promote cereal and educational software. it was a ridiculously good deal: inside any box of cereal was a coupon for a $5 CD-ROM for the *full* version of a MS educational or reference program.

these were some of their flagship educational programs like Dinosaurs, Oceans, Explorapedia, Dangerous Creatures and Entertainment Pack 3. considering that these were $50-$60 at a couple of years earlier, it was a ridiculously good price.

i wonder how many kids unknowingly grew up with a Kellogg’s CD version of these, because their parents ordered copies from the cereal box?

Why Buying a "Windows" Laptop Sucks in 2026

Thanks to a very kind soul over on the #68kMLA forums who was willing to mail a working #Macintosh LC sound chip across the proverbial pond to me, I'm very happy that the "sold as junk/broken" Mac LC is now fully operational!

To celebrate this, I decided to do a fresh installation of System 7.1 on it. I had up until now been using a modified 7.5.3 based off of the pre-installed images available on the #BlueSCSI website, the same one I had been using for testing and whatnot on my restored Color Classic, but I figured going slightly back in time would help these old machines perform a bit better.

Sadly I don't have an original boxed version of 7.1, those seem exceedingly difficult to come by, so I made some copies and installed it that way.

The difference in boot-up time is already incredible, though I do miss the expandable folders in the Apple menu. Perhaps there's an extension for that under 7.1, not sure.

Either way; everything seems to be running nicely, including the Presto 040 clone card, which really makes a noticeable difference in performance.

Now onto its companion CRT monitor. Recapping it wasn't enough, it seems like there's some more components inside that have gotten damaged by a leaky capacitor, so that journey continues. For now, though, I can at least use a VGA monitor thanks to one of those adapter thingamabobs.

Right after I had replaced the sound chip and had the Mac happily beeping and booping, I actually sat down and played SimAnt for the first time ever (!), and actually was able to complete a whole campaign. I had a blast!

Meshtastic is a LoRa-based mesh networking protocol that allows low-power, long-range communication over radio bands. There's a work in progress TEXTMSG client for #AtariST (and #Amiga, #Macintosh, #MSDOS) computers https://macumbaeditor.com/examples/mesh.html #meshtastic #atari

back in 1996 i was a year away from graduating from high school and deep into my cd-rom obsession

from 1994 onward, every month i bought a $12 copy of CD-ROM Today because it came with The Disc! - a coverdisc packed full of mac and pc demos and shareware

except for one issue. this issue. as the resident early Seinfeld hater of my people, i was also a proud Jim Carrey hater when he was at his peak.

i was so truly offended by the cover of this issue that i refused to buy it on principle.

a month later, I went back to my Coles bookstore to get my fix, and the magazine was gone from the shelves. i checked two other bookstores - it wasn’t out of stock; it had disappeared entirely. by september, it was clear that the magazine was never coming back, and i gave up looking for it. i was heartbroken - it was something i had counted on every month for years.

a few years ago i started buying every issue of the magazine i could find. it took months just to assemble a complete year’s worth of issues.

and then, this morning: I begrudgingly flip open the issue that i had refused to buy 30 years ago. a note from the editor explains that as of this issue, CD-ROM Today is ceasing publication, and forking into Boot magazine and MacAddict!

i would have been fucking overjoyed to know that i now had *two* cd-rom mags to buy! instead, when i saw MacAddict and Boot appear on the shelves, i just assumed they were inferior fly-by-night zines that would disappear after a few issues. 😭
