Sulfur tuft (Hypholoma fasciculare) clump: They usually are less spread out and form a clump that looks more like a pile of biscuits, but these are in full display. These toxic wood decomposers are common world wide.

Some mushrooms look very strange. Steccherinum bourdotii has spikes underneath that resemble the lining of silent chambers where no sound can be reflected. I have no idea what evolutionary advantage this provides. I took these on a cold day earlier this winter.

In a scene reminiscent of ‘The Last of Us’, here’s an entomopathogenic (Ophiocordyceps) fungi-infected European wasp (Vespula germanica) I found in NZ bush.

Although it’s presumably a terrible way to go, I can’t say I’m too sorry, as these wasps are an introduced pest of major concern in Aotearoa!
