I’m on a roll now, so better late than never, here’s the #JWST MIRI mid-infrared image of the so-called “Pillars of Creation” in Messier 16, released earlier this week.
The blue-grey pillars are shining in the light of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, complex molecules associated with dust that are energised by the UV light of the nearby massive stars.

This is not an ethereal landscape of time-forgotten tombs. Nor are these soot-tinged fingers reaching out. These pillars, flush with gas and dust, ‘enshroud’ stars that are slowly forming over many millennia. The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has snapped this eerie, extremely dusty view of the Pillars of Creation in mid-infrared light — showing us a new view of a familiar landscape.

Basically, news orgs will need to break the habit of reporting stuff that happens on Twitter as news.
If enough of them manage to do so, that would actually be a real improvement: they would have to go back to hunting news closer to its source, rather than just waiting to have it spoon-fed by The Algorithm.
