Scientists Push for More Ambitious Climate Targets

Researchers say a line has been crossed. For systems like #CoralReefs and #IceSheets, the #climate is already past safe.

Scientists studying climate #TippingPoints say the world should aim to limit warming to about 1 degree Celsius, warning that the 1.5-degree target enshrined in international climate agreements won’t protect coral reefs, polar ice sheets and other vital Earth systems from irreversible change.

❄️🧊💧Changes in Northern Hemisphere ice sheets can propagate through the climate system & affect the remote region of Antarctica. Testorf et al. used idealized simulations of the past 8,000 years with a coupled climate-ice sheet model to reveal a previously unknown teleconnection that sends periodic pulses of warm water to West Antarctic ice shelves, triggering a self-amplifying retreat of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Sentinel-1's decade of essential data over shifting ice sheets

Ice velocity is a key parameter in measuring the effects of #ClimateChange. The speed at which #glaciers and #IceSheets move tells us the rate at which they discharge ice and water into the sea, feeding into estimations on future #SeaLevelRise. Data on ice velocity also help to keep track of the break-up of ice sheets, such as calving events or damage to the ice sheets.
Since its first satellite was launched in 2014, the #Copernicus #Sentinel1 mission has provided a step change in the capabilities of polar satellite Earth observation. Its 12-m-long advanced #SAR instrument works in C-band. This makes it a reliable tool for acquiring high-resolution imagery for continuous monitoring and emergency response efforts. It is able to capture data through cloud cover, smoke and during lack of sunlight.

Prince and Briner present a new sea level curve for the southern Nares Strait in Greenland. They find an GIA induced exponential lowering of relative sea level from the highstand of 85 m at about 9000 years ago.
