A few years ago I planted a small winter linden (*Tilia cordata*) in the garden, and every year it's a joy to watch it grow. Right now the first flower buds are forming — those tiny clusters that will soon fill the air with one of the most beautiful scents of summer.

Linden trees are incredibly valuable for biodiversity. Their flowers are a magnet for bumblebees, honeybees, and countless other insects. The linden is often called the "queen of nectar trees" — and for good reason. Watching this tree slowly establish itself is one of those slow garden rewards that makes every patient year worth it.

🐕🌡️ Scientists around the world are finding that high temperatures impair #animal cognition.

From pied babblers in #SouthAfrica that can’t solve simple puzzles to #bumblebees in #Sweden that forget which #flowers to visit, heat scrambles memory, #learning, and self-control. #Dogs bite more, chamois in the Italian Apennines pick fights, and golden julie #fish get aggressive at their own reflection.

They call it stupid hot for a reason: Heat muddles animal brains

As temperatures rise, some creatures pick fights while others struggle to learn. The consequences of these behavioral changes may ripple through ecosystems.

Four-banded Longhorn Beetle, Bumblebees and Shield Bug Nymph!

It’s that time of year for the poppies… This year, my ‘collection’ seemed to be blooming really late. No matter, they’re here and they make me happy !
I love my wild garden, and so do all the bees, bumblebees, butterflies and other little insects (and, of course, the birds too)

The photo isn’t recent, though, I think it’s from last year. Of course, my little half-frame camera must have a shot of this year’s poppies in it
(I’ll keep you posted ;)

…large amounts of water metabolically during flight #bumblebees are less prone to dehydration/desiccation than most terrestrial insects.

However they still need safe access to water.

Research suggests that #bees locate sources of #water by smell rather than sight.

A yellow-faced bumblebee on California lilac. I gather honeybees avoid the Ceanothus but obviously bumblebees like it. The bumblebees did not stop moving for me.

There are #Bumblebees living under our garden shed. Now seems if I leave the door open too long it obstructs them and I get a queue of bees circling waiting to go for a nap (or whatever it is they're doing under there). #Bees
Looks like it's a very good year for #bees and #bumblebees. Impressive amount of them in my blooming tree. Love the sound they're making (turn up the sound!).

Busy Bee and the Endangered Meadow – about the first Busy Bee book

In Endangered Meadow the bees of Old Oak Meadow have to unite the meadow’s inhabitants to stop some developers building houses all over it. The UK has lost 97% of its meadows since the middle of the 20th century and the madness of the planning system means that councils want to build more little boxes where the only way to get anywhere is through owning a car. An unsustainable model of growth whether those cars are fossil fuel powered or are electric powered. So one clever bee, Beatrice, Bea to her friends, the hardest working bee in the hive, comes up with an ingenious idea of how to save the meadow. Can the bees and the other creatures of Old Oak Meadow save their home?

We need bees for our own selfish survival and through my books I try to show to the younger generation how important they are. The book is available globally via Amazon and two of the links are given below. It’s available in two print versions, a 9″x5″ paperback and A4 format with the large illustrations repeated at the back and also as an ebook. This is one of Alice Wright’s wonderful illustrations.
