I’m just this guy, you know

It is difficult to describe just how disastrous it would be if just-released NOAA budget proposal (or even large portions) were to be enacted: It would involve a wholesale dismantling (decimation, really) of entities relevant to weather, climate, & ocean research & prediction.
@lowqualityfacts Early intelligence reports indicate you’ve likely obliterated all previous mastodon boosting records, it’s incredible, no one’s ever done what you’ve done before!!!

How can you defend Iran with stories like this of a woman 5 months pregnant, arrested on suspicion of a civil violation, forced to sleep in shackles on a dungeon floor with cockroaches, denied access to reproductive healthcare, & suffered a stillbirth, which she was forced to deliver in front of prison guards. Horrific.

WAIT. Did I say Iran? I meant this happened in Louisiana this week to Iris Dayana Monterroso-Lemus, whose fiancee is a US citizen and she had no criminal record. #ThisIsAmerica

I'm reading this book rn. It's about Jim a runaway slave with his friend huck finn.
Really makes y'all understand how whites treated black people. Not just in plantations but everywhere so degrading. Got to the bit about mistrels what tf 😒 . Book takes you on his journey thru towns and what he faces. That why we celebrate #juneteenth 👊🏾

Aight, fine. Crashing now, after a wee dram of rye, the last half a beer.

Same thing I said yesterday, last week, last month, last year, during Ferguson. same thing I always say.

Stay safe.
Stay strong.
Stay angry.
Stay kind.

I am aware that you are not perfect. I don't care. I know you're trying to become who and how you wish to be, and I know that I believe in who and how you wish to be.

As Wally the dog reminds me every single day, "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE I GET ANOTHER CHANCE!"

A note from a human rights lawyer to members of the U.S. Armed Forces: If you are directed to execute illegal orders, remember, declaring “I was just following orders” was not deemed a valid defense during the Nuremberg trials, and it won’t be a valid defense here either.

You have an oath to the U.S. Constitition and due process of law. Honor that—not the illegal orders of a 34X convicted felon.

@GottaLaff will still be hilarious if someone Tank Mans the parade

@Jaden3 that is great novel, loved it
@FeloniousPunk I'm 60% thru it's brilliant 👏🏾
@Jaden3 just finished this the other day, amazing book
@Jaden3
I have a copy of "James" on my desk waiting to be read, in line behind 3 other books.
@Jaden3 @Hyperiontrails oooh I’ve got this on my to be read pile! Heard so much good stuff about it

@Jaden3 Getting it. Thank you!

I love Twain and loved Huck. I'm sure he would have approved of this if its well executed.

@Jaden3 read that last month. Great book
@Jaden3 I really loved that book. It deserves all the big time prizes it's gotten. All of his books are great, so if you like this, keep going. The man is a treasure. Btw, you've already read Giovanni's Room (James Baldwin), right? If not, I hope you do soon. It will speak to you even more than James does, I think. Do you write?
@KateOfMind thanks i haven't read that.i did try writing a book a while back but I stopped. It was time travel. I need to carry on

@Jaden3

Time travel are the hardest stories to write.

You might want to start in a shallower part of the pool.

@Jaden3 Just got my copy! Managed to get this edition in the UK too because I just love the cover...

@Jaden3 I liked Huckleberry Finn better than Tom Sawyer as a kid. (Tom was only about himself.) It seems interesting to revisit this story from a different perspective. I just put it on hold for me at the county library.

Thank you for letting me know about this book!

@Jaden3 A movie that truly opened my mind about slavery in the US was 12 Years A Slave. A free Black man was tricked into a situation where he was then captured and sold into slavery. It's a true story and told by the man who lived 12 years as a slave. It is brutal and heart-wrenching.

We got a signed first edition of James by Everett. I'm looking forward to reading it. But we purchased a whole shelf of books for Black History month and another Banned Books and another LGBTQ+. My list is long.

@RegGuy did you see him to get it signed?
@Jaden3 I did not, he was at our local bookstore, and the owner got some extras signed while he was there. I wish I had.
@Jaden3 Fantastic book! I couldn't put it down and read the whole thing cover to cover in a day!

@Jaden3 My local library: “135 holds on first copy returned of 40 copies”

(And I’m about to make that 136 now…)

@Jaden3

like many others, i loved this book.

I have read more Percival Everett too, he is an AMAZING writer.

i also highly recommend his novel Erasure

AND its movie adaptation, American Fiction,
which Everett worked on with the filmmakers. Jeffrey Wright plays the lead and he is SO GOOD. (should have won the Oscar for it, but he was nominated)

@rustoleumlove I will check that out thanks 😊
@Jaden3 I loved that book, the codeswitching people do to get by
@sunumbral yeah I know must be so difficult
@Jaden3 Thank you for the tip! Just started it, loving it so far :)
@Jaden3 my sister read me a couple excerpts of this. the lessons on how to act and talk around white people... i had vaguely known about the "slave talk" code switching thing, but getting a deeper look was enlightening
@matildalove for real I didn't know either
@matildalove @Jaden3 Reminded me of the amazing movie Sorry To Bother You on the code switching
@Jaden3 Thanks for the book rec, Jaden
I just ordered it.
So happy to follow you.
💯

@Jaden3 this shit was top rated on the BBC until 1978 and a stage show into the late 80s

The Black & White Minstrel Show - TV Special #6 (S20 EP6 21/07/78)

@bobthomson70 what the fck !!!! I was tryna to visualize it when I was reading the book. Shit they actually had it on tv ???

@bobthomson70 @Jaden3 Don't read the comments either, they are all waxing nostalgic for this show.

and trying to claim it's not racist because it was ok when it was aired.

That sort of thinking is how you get maga.

@bobthomson70 I was 15 on the date it was screened. I thought it was disgusting even then.

@bobthomson70 @Jaden3

My God. I'm English, but this was before my time. Skin-crawling from start to finish...

@Jaden3 I haven't read James yet (looking forward to it!), but yes, Erasure and The Trees are superb, in very different ways smart, hilarious, sharp..

@Jaden3

great book

if you have not read The Trees by the same author, check it out sometime! it's super intense

@peachfront thanks I will 👍🏾
@Jaden3 I’m also reading this rn
@Jaden3 i read his Trees, which was amazing. Having my head in the sand, I hadn't heard of this. Ordered from library, thanks!
@Jaden3 Just got back from Tulsa after visiting Greenwood Rising. I was moved and horrified. I'd recommend it to everyone who cares about African-American history in the US https://www.greenwoodrising.org/exhibitions
Greenwood Rising | Exhibitions

Visitors explore the history of Tulsa’s Historic Greenwood District and connect to the spirit of its Black citizens through an immersive journey that uses projection mapping, holographic effect, and environmental media.

GREENWOOD RISING
@SholtoFisher thanks for sharing 👍🏾 if I ever get to Tulsa i visit that fasho
@Jaden3 Excellent novel, and the author is married to another terrific novelist, Danzy Senna, whose book Colored Television is also getting lots of praise. I loved both of them.
