Living in Sydney, I work as a design engineer at Canva by day. Otherwise, I’m just a human trying to make sense of the world. 🏳️‍🌈

I had a lot of fun building these microinteractions and making my site feel at home on Apple platforms

I can’t count how much time I spent on this popover animation—it got me inspecting screen recordings frame by frame

It marked a great opportunity for me to give my writing a permanent home on my own domain, and have full control over how they’re presented

There are so many small details I sweated over—I wrote about a bunch of them and the overarching details of the design here:

This year, I (finally) redesigned my #PersonalWebsite:
sidney.me 🎉

It’s based on postcards: a design constraint that helped me make more thoughtful decisions about what I want to say, how to stay succinct, and how to do it graphically. They also focus attention and scale well to mobile

UPDATE: I’ve switched back to Chrome at work and I’m not even missing features like Peek View … wow

I’d been using the Arc browser daily since it was invite-only, so The Browser Company confirming it’s effectively dead still stings.

I really admired Arc for how thoughtful it was and how much craft went into it. So I wrote an obituary for my favourite browser:

@ia Hey! Really enjoyed reading this—just noticed there seems to be some formatting errors in the Jony Ive quotes attached to footnote 10. Also, his name is listed as “Joni Ive” throughout

There are minor difference but you have to look from close, and, mostly, you'd have to check under the hood.

The love and care we put into it from the start and the nerves of just sticking with the main idea and treating every new feature with maximum attention and care making sure the text stays in the foreground...

It is not common in an industry that sells with new features and generally follows the path of more and more stuff.

I’ve had so many thoughts swirling in my head this year about #AI, especially how it affects #art. Now I’ve finally written a blog post about it!

Does AI herald an industrial revolution for art? • sidney.me

I recently came across a comment thread discussing a blog post, Goodbye Slopify. It’s a short post that exposes Spotify inserting AI-generated music with AI-generated album art in its Discover Weekly playlist…
