🧑‍🎓 An urban geographer and a doctoral researcher at the University of Helsinki working in @digigeolab.

💭 I attempt to understand urban diversity through languages and activities of urban dwellers with mass data sources like social media and population registers.

🖥️ I combine #urban #geography, #multilingualism, #GIS #geospatial #spatial, #NLP and #computervision methods.

🛠️ I mainly use #linux, #python and #foss tools.

🌟 I like #barefootshoes, #discgolf, #longboarding, and #badmovies 🧟

It's actually pretty amazing that a open source product developed by a tiny non-profit, running on a network of servers self-funded by volunteer administrator and moderators has managed to absorb some portion of one of the world's largest for-profit social networks.

It's a miracle the whole thing didn't collapse or catch fire.

Great job everyone.

Mastodon is insanely more rewarding for me than Twitter. With about a 10th of the followers, it draws almost as many views to my videos as Twitter. The platform is really, really good.

I also love the feeling of using an #opensource platform to communicate with people.

Mastodon is really having a moment in mainstream news coverage. CNN, BBC, TIME, etc.

The influx of users will continue at an alarming rate. Remember to be welcoming, and kind, and positive, and helpful.

This isn't just an opportunity to improve the idea of social media, it's an opportunity to shine a wonderful light on #opensource.

Ever visited #Finnish #sauna? I love it too! ❤️ Had some fun time playing around with #OpenSkyNetwork data among other sources and combining this to the sacred activity of Finns (#sauna) for the #30DayMapChallenge 🤓🌍 This #open sauna-air #map was shows how many hours Finns can swet in sauna with the same carbon-footprint as the people of these flights. This was inspired by Giulio Mattioli et al. paper: We should pay more attention to the env impacts of long flights: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0966692322001806

Who’d have guessed Elon Musk would pay $44 billion to promote Mastodon.

I see a lot of people talking about how Mastodon "Feels like the Internet I remember from 20 years ago."

That's no accident. That's Federation. That's UseNet, IRC, Email, Message Boards, etc. What do they all have in common?

Federation: Users congregating around watering holes of common interest, but still being a part of a larger whole.

THIS IS HOW THE INTERNET WAS DESIGNED TO BE. And I am HERE for it.

"Eduskuntavaalien lähestyessä suomalainen yhteiskunta on tiukan paikan edessä. Julkisen talouden tila, väestönmuutos ja ilmastokriisi pakottavat etsimään täysin uusia ratkaisuja – pelkkä vanhan päivittäminen ei riitä.
Tarvitsemme korkeatasoista tutkimusta, reilusti enemmän korkeasti koulutettuja osaajia, suurempaa innovaatiokyvykkyyttä ja tutkitun tiedon entistä parempaa hyödyntämistä läpi koko yhteiskunnan."

I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's
