2025 and we are being asked to read Playboy for the articles

I just saw a quote from Donald Trump’s 1990 interview with Playboy. It’s wild. He gets all reflective and shit. To be an adept in Trump Studies you have to read it. It’s here: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/q66nty2m84q2e9kb8w672/Playboy-interview-with-Trump-1990.pdf?rlkey=qgrgd52h6qvwb791j4s8e09cb&dl=0

When you're tempted to believe the fash never respond to pressure: this was held up before, now released after the floods in TX.

NOAA (under BIDEN) was already doing the work. Trump wanted to kill it, if at all possible. Pressure (& tragedy) made it impossible.

R voters need to connect the dots & toss these people out. Until that happens, the fash will continue to kill as many as possible: it gives them power.

In the meantime, pressure can work to reduce the harm.

We found hacked data that revealed dozens of people on deportation flights to El Salvador are missing.

Flight Manifests Reveal Dozens of Previously Unknown People on Three Deportation Flights to El Salvador

Hacked data obtained by 404 Media reveals dozens more people on deportation flights to El Salvador who are unaccounted for. “We have not heard from these people’s families, so I think perhaps even they don’t know," one lawyer said.

I went on Marketplace to talk about how ICE is accessing an insurance fraud database to assist in location targets to deport (the Associated Press just reported the Trump administration handed over Medicaid recipients’ personal data, including addresses, to ICE)

Joseph Cox, reporter at the tech news site 404 Media, has been following all of the surveillance tech ICE agents are using to identify undocumented immigrants. More recently, he said, the agency is getting hold of many databases to dig through for potential targets.

The significant legal differences between the United States and Europe cause Nintendo to punish piracy differently depending on the territory.

This was the obvious plan from the beginning (and I'm not the only one who's been saying it, but this is really fucking bad)
@susankayequinn well, this is already happening in the prison systen. Now, with an extra step: not even hiding the slavery

@theklan I understand our for-profit prison system and how it's a modern day slavery system.

This does away with the pretense of crime. Or rather this "criminalizes" an entire class of people who are *right now* doing nothing but working Aisle 13 of Home Depot, but now we're going to drag you out of Home Depot, put you into prison and then... monetize "loaning you out" to Home Depot.

It's doing away with the legal system entirely. And it could be anyone they choose.

@susankayequinn yes, I completely understand the great leap. Scary times.
@susankayequinn it's so f*cking perverse: detainees may be given a "choice" between baking in white tents in a tropical Florida swamp, or "release" to work as slaves? I'm beyond words.
@deborahh it really is rage inducing
@susankayequinn ❤💔 condolences 😥

@deborahh It's strange to be in Canada this last week or so, seeing these things from a little bit more distance... it doesn't change my anger or anything, but the contrast is substantial, and it's clarifying to move through city after city and province and state and see how different they are and how we *choose* these things, they are not immutable forces of nature.

We make a lot of *really bad* choices but we know how to make good ones too. It makes it all the more enraging tbh

@susankayequinn if I understand this (https://www.doorbraak.eu/een-archipel-van-concentratiekampen-verspreid-over-de-vs/) correctly, slavery is legal in the US (the Dutch article points to https://snyder.substack.com/p/concentration-camp-labor as its source). As long as the “slaves” are so-called “criminals”… The scary part is that it’s all out in the open…

Doorbraak.eu

@cejjacobs yes, the 13th amendment allows slavery for criminals, that is not new and the for-profit prison system is a horror in the US.

The scary part is NOT that this is out in the open (it's never been secret) — the scary part is they have abandoned the rule of law entirely.

ANYONE can be a "criminal"...this does away with the pretense of crime....

@cejjacobs

...It "criminalizes" an entire class of people who are *right now* doing nothing but working Aisle 13 of Home Depot (or picking strawberries in the field), but now we're going to drag you out of Home Depot (or the field or your home), put you into prison and then... monetize "loaning you out" to Home Depot.

It's doing away with the legal system entirely. And it could be anyone they choose.

@susankayequinn we agree, it’s overturning the rule of law that’s scary, especially openly doing so. It was never about chasing away foreigners, but designing a system to get “free labor” for the rich. And as with all oppressing regimes, laborers includes all those opposing the regime.
@susankayequinn @cejjacobs Funny you mention Home Depot, they're also financing Cop City Atlanta. Seems like a lot of businesses smell more profits:

@susankayequinn @cejjacobs Yup. They were formerly required to at least pretend to have justification. That's not a requirement anymore.

@gooba42 @cejjacobs

They also didn’t wholesale criminalize millions of people, snatch them off the street with masks and no ID, and appropriate more money than the budget of the Marines to incarcerate.

What’s happening is categorically a different scale and yes that matters.

@cejjacobs @susankayequinn yes, I wrote this in January, and I'm still shocked it's done so openly.

📈 For-profit-prison stocks rose on Trump's re-election.

👨🏼‍⚖️ Reframing narrative of immigration from civil to criminal to justify forced labor under fig leaf of 13th Amendment.

“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States" 13th Amendment US Constitution

More Wretch Than Sage

@cejjacobs @susankayequinn yes, it’s spelled out in the text of the 13th Amendment.

Section 1

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

Section 2

Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.

@mtconleyuk yes but now we're doing away with the need to "actually do a crime" before being sent to the for-profit prison/slavery system.

(yes, I know it's been used disproportionately against Black folks forever; if that gif were accurate, it wouldn't be white people on the chain gang)

@susankayequinn

Lending out some "inmates" to local farmers was one way NAZI Germany used to convince the people the concentration camps were just work camps.

@susankayequinn

So MAGA wants to round up immigrants, because they're "stealing" jobs.

And now we're going to send them right back to those same jobs, and pay for it with taxpayer money.

They're going to be so mad when they find out slave labor is now stealing jobs. 🙄

@susankayequinn Tear down their camps. Shatter the foundations of their prisons
@susankayequinn Why did the Democrats go along with this? Privatised prisons ffs
@JosjeT @susankayequinn I have seen a mayor and several Democrats representatives get assaulted and arrested.
@Doeshecook @susankayequinn I am referring to the Clinton and Obama previdencies
@JosjeT @susankayequinn as always broad statements require a deep dive. Obama had a mixed immigration policy. He pushed for DACA and status for green card holders. In his first term he did deport a record number but that dropped off by his second term for several reasons. IMO immigration policy works for GOP and they will not compromise for a change.
Just like any legislation it always takes a compromise if we truly want to live in a Democracy.
@susankayequinn this can not happen!! They will “make a deal”. My mom tells me of AZ ranchers in the 50’s turning in their farm hands at end of the season so they didn’t have to pay them.
Leonard Ritter (@lritter@mastodon.gamedev.place)

@emptywheel.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy @ddayen.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy that shit is going to be turned into for-profit and then slavery is back. long live the confederacy i guess.

@susankayequinn Prison labor has always been legal. Why do you think so many brown people are incarcerated? They commit crimes at the same rate but rates of incarceration are much higher

@susankayequinn

where is the UN?

how is this allowed?

@susankayequinn #AlligatorAuschwitz - it's a concentration camp, for ethnic cleansing, not a prison for criminals

@mason he calls it a concentration camp

I'd call it a work camp as well — they're already talking about using the LABOR not exterminating people

Not that work camps can't also be torture camps and death camps
