I'm just the guy who does the thing.

Been working on this post for a couple weeks now, though it's still mostly introspection around the decision-making process I went through (and am still going through) around leaving academia for my new industry role.

Discusses some particulars of the decision, but mostly why---even after years of trying and failing to make the faculty role sustainable---I still have mixed feelings about leaving.

It's official. With no notifice to National Science Foundation employees, Trump is moving the HUD in and NSF out. There is no announced plan where to send NSF.

Science is being deported by the Trump administration.

Jesus Soriano, president of the union representing NSF workers said: “Is the government more interested in the technological and scientific leadership of this country or on using taxpayer dollars to offer luxury accommodations to government officials?”

Six months ago: get attacked in multiple executive orders that declare everything you work on in STEM education "illegal", funding pulled from your field

Now: get EDI award as you continue to do the work anyway, as you always have and always will

Oh ffs, guess I'm done with Spotify.

While on the family plan subscription and with no prior interest seeding, #Spotify is currently recommending a German-language far-right white nationalist podcast to my kid, who just came to me to complain about it.

So seriously, what's a good, non-enshittified alternative to Spotify these days? Recommendations needed, what do you use instead of Spotify and why?

(Thanks for retoots.)

Interesting and good preliminary result in U of California researchers class action against Trump regime for yanking their grants. https://calmatters.org/education/higher-education/2025/06/health-research-california/ #LawFedi
Legal rulings may return hundreds of health research grants to California

Trump’s move to cancel health research funding would wipe out funding for studies on lung disease, dementia and aging.

Got a press release from #MEAction today saying the only #LongCovid clinic in North Carolina, at UNC, is closing. The clinic has seen 3500 people, 70% women, and 43% had stopped working.

Dire.

apropos of nothing, this crossed my feed just now
