Lost in the Stock

Why brands are so secretive about what goes into their chicken broth and stock recipes.

Oldest-ever DNA shows mastodons roamed Greenland 2 million years ago

Genetic material collected from permafrost shows northern part of the island was once a lush forest, home to poplar trees and other surprising organisms.

HELLO #ChemiVerse – just signed someone else up to #Mastodon... say hello to @sirfrasersays!

Everything ever observed - all normal matter - stars, planets, me & you, the very screen you’re looking at - makes up <5% of the universe.

The other 95% is a combination of “dark matter” & “dark energy.” Think of it as a big question mark.

That means we still have so much to discover ✨

#Twitter is top down. ⬇️

#Mastodon is self-organizing. ↔️

Still lots of unknowns & we’ll see how it all shakes out over time, but IMHO a decentralized network likely fosters trust & relationships in a way Twitter can’t. And that feels more sustainable over time. (FWIW I study community sustainability).

Also, so far it’s more pleasant here for women. #TwitterMigration

I'm a big fan of topologically non-trivial molecules (things like #Borromean rings and #catenanes) as well as being a fan of #sterochemistry (are vampires #chiral?)

Somewhat of a pedant too – I enjoy pointing out left-handed #DNA helices far more than is probably healthy.

Was a huge fan of that birdsite before it turned into a dumpster fire; even wrote an #Editorial about it once upon a time!

Also love #foraging – mostly to make sloe (or quince) gin. Huge fan of #wine from the #Jura too!

Not being able to one-click follow a user who's on a different server from yours, directly from their profile page, is a pain point and feels like needless friction.

I spoke about this a few days ago, but since there are so many new folks here: Mastodon has lists. And they're useful. You need to already be following people but you can put them into lists and then just call up that list. So, I have a list for journalists, and for tech law people. And it's super useful for me.

Unfortunately, lists are not currently public or shareable, though.

But test out the list feature to make Mastodon more useful.

Hey science journalists, we've got two 12-month (parental cover) reporter positions open with Nature in London - more info & application at https://careers.springernature.com/job/London-Reporter-or-Senior-Reporter,-Nature/866455301/
