A touchscreen? A stylus? A built-in microphone? Critics were skeptical. Gamers were curious. But within months, the DS exploded in popularity, bridging generations and demographics like no system before it.

But what exactly made the DS such a runaway success? Was it the hardware, the innovative software, or something more?

@outofprintarchive Mario Kart DS was the first Nintendo game I played online. Internet races were only 4-player, but it all worked so well.

Also, I think this iteration of Mario Kart has my favorite track set.

@GamesMissed
I actually think it was the same for me.
I did play a lot of Dreamcast online, but didn’t have a broadband adapter for GameCube or anything.

Mario Kart DS was pure perfection for me.
The only thing I didn’t like were the snakers online. It completely ruined the flow of the game.
I could use the technique myself, but didn’t want to as it was no fun at all.
