Mercury is closest to the Sun, feeling the strongest solar wind. When spacecraft first explored Mercury in the 1970s, they discovered a faint planetary magnetic field interacting with the solar wind. During its recent flybys of Mercury, ESA's BepiColumbo mission recorded these interactions and found a feature called "whistler waves" (also found in the Earth's magnetic field), only appearing in a small part of the magnetosphere. The mission will arrive at Mercury in 2025.
<p>Observations during two flybys by the Mio spacecraft as part of the BepiColombo International Mercury Exploration Project have revealed that chorus waves occur quite locally in the dawn sector of Mercury. Mercury's magnetic field is about 1% of that of Earth, and it was unclear whether chorus waves would be generated like on Earth. The present study reveals that the chorus waves are the driving source of Mercury’s X-ray auroras, whose mechanism was not understood.</p>
