As @daphnaorenm @hadarbatjoyce @ymishory have all pointed out, this letter does not mention Christmas and actually coincides a lot better with the Muslim 'Eid al-Adha. I did check an online Hijiri calendar, but for some reason it didn't flag 'Eid for that date. My mistake in any case and many thanks for the correction!

This clearly makes the letter a lot less "absurd", but it's still fascinating to see this type of cordial interaction between parties that only a few years later would find themselves in warring camps. I, for one, didn't know the Saudis had a consulate in Jerusalem until I found this. One doesn't have to look far before 1948 to find curious examples of blurred lines or even cooperation.

@histodons

People sometimes ask me what's the weirdest thing I've ever found in an #archive. I once found a porn magazine cutting (in a folder from the 1930s) and a friend stumbled upon a letter bomb, undetonated but duly filed.

Here's an absurd highlight from the #Jerusalem Municipality Archive: A short note from the #Sephardic Cheif Rabbi to the #Saudi Consul in #Palestine, conveying his best wishes to the King for the 1942 Christmas holidays. Of course, neither of them celebrated Christmas!

Why on earth would a rabbi send Christmas greetings to the Arab world's most conservative muslim state? I'm open to theories.

Happy holidays, be that #Christmas or #Hannukah!

Hello!
I'm Eirik and I'm a historian of the Modern Middle East. I work on transnational histories between Palestine/Israel and the Persian Gulf, with a particular focus on Jewish history.

I grew up in Norway, but my institutional home is currently Oxford University where I'm third year PhD student.

Still new to this place, so do hit me up with suggestions and new people to follow! Feel free to check out my website www.kvindesland.net

Hello, everyone! I am new to Mastodon, am returning after my server’s data wipeout, and would like to do an #introduction.
I am a #historian of global #migration, specializing in the #MiddleEast, #Caucasus, and the #Balkans. My forthcoming book examines the resettlement of up to a million Muslim #refugees from #Russia in the #Ottoman Empire. I am broadly interested in histories of displacement, especially in the #Muslim world, and the making of national and international refugee regimes. #histodon
I am an Assistant Professor of Global Studies at UC Santa Barbara, where I deputy-direct the Center for Middle East Studies.
I am looking forward to gradually making home on this platform and to learning about everyone’s work.

My new article is now out in the American Historical Review. In it, I argue that the history of Palestinian-West German ties offers a fresh perspective on the global history of the 1960s and 1970s.🧵 1/7

I am migrating to Mastodon!

Here is a brief introduction. I am a historian of migration and displacement in the Middle East, Russia, and Eastern Europe.

I am an Assistant Professor of Global Studies at UC Santa Barbara, where I am also Vice-Director of the Center for Middle East Studies.

My forthcoming book examines the migration and resettlement of about a million Muslim refugees from Russia's North Caucasus in the Ottoman Empire. I am working on a new project on Muslim displacement in the Middle East, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and South Asia.

I am looking forward to building a new community with everyone here.

I'm already excited for the World History Association conference next June at Pitt. Energies, indeed! Early CFP still open. The WHA is a great space for collaboration between and among secondary teachers and academic #histodons.
