Lot of interesting sources on NDL online collections are embedded in scanned US occupation period files. Example: the 日満支 工業年鑑 for 昭和15 is only available as part of evidence for war crimes trials here: https://dl.ndl.go.jp/pid/12922208/1/4 while elsewhere only up to 昭和13 (https://dl.ndl.go.jp/ja/pid/1115528) #japan #primarysources #asianists

Lots of updates to this page dedicated to the old“Chinese Literature” journal with its thousands of English translations. Over 200 issues online from 1950s-80s. Added “Search”, “Explore” and an author table with pinyin/hanzi versions of a few dozen of the over a thousand authors. https://froginawell.net/chinese-literature/ #china #literature #asianists
I added a section to our Frog in a Well Primary Source guide to Korean History with some links to open access copies of volumes with Japanese statistics from colonial Korea - https://froginawell.net/frog/sources/primary-sources-modern-korean-history/#japanese #japan #korea #primarysources #histodons #asianists

Some students in my China Revolutions honours module are studying Chinese. I thought I would give them some flashcards of useful terms related to the history covered by the module (late Qing to 1989) which I put here on Frog in a Well:

https://froginawell.net/games/terms/

Are there any important terms/slogans etc. I have left out that you think I should include (mostly Maoist China)?

Flashcard Review

Stumbled across journalist Jacques Marcuse's 1967 "Peking Papers" memoir. Suffers from the typical issues with more snarky westerners in Maoist China, but Ch 30 overview Lei Feng campaign is quite funny, especially on Lei Feng's "reincarnations" like Wang Jie 王杰. https://archive.org/details/pekingpapers0000jacq #china #asianists #histodons

Made an interactive practice map of China with modern provinces, provincial capitals and a few other cities important in modern Chinese history for use in my China's Revolutions module. This is for students to help practice for their map quiz (required but no grade for credit). They'll be asked to label a printed blank version of the map and draw their best attempt at the (modern) course of the Yellow and Yangzi rivers.

China Map

Put together a little timeline flashcard engine with an LLM for my China's Revolutions module (focuses on 1850s to 1989) for my students to review a basic timeline and one of the supplemental timelines on a period they want to focus on. Supplemental timelines don't repeat the main events in the first timeline required for study. Would welcome feedback on events you think ought to be included or dates/details I've gotten wrong.

Modern East Asian History Timeline Review

I reflected on one of the most unusual Shanghai Municipal Police files I keep bumping into over the years:

The Case of the Electric Projecting Killing Machine (1939-1941)

The Case of the Electric Projecting Killing Machine

In May, 1939, while the Japanese military controlled the Chinese parts of the city, an “urgent report” was sent to the Louza Police Station (Laozha 老閘) in the International Settlement: “An appeal f…
