Something I've found building a 'retro internet service' is the absolute culture gap with younger people (early 20's)

They find the project interesting but then get anxious asking "okay but what can I contribute". Like they need to "hustle" or "prove their worth to be here"

I have to explain to them "do things that make you happy. Build things that bring you joy"

The internet they grew up on is so *transactional* that it's just how they've come to expect it. That it wants something "of them"

We're experimenting with federated geosocial features in Bonfire, free from surveillance capitalism.
Check into your local community garden. Add location to mutual aid requests. Find tools nearby.
Imagine your local fablab or community center sharing check-ins, calendars, events, opening hours - all federated. A living hub for what's happening there.

What's the difference between a 501(c)3 and a 501(c)4? ๐Ÿค” All nonprofits can be engaged in some kinds of advocacy! This insightful conversation with Kat Rohn of Out Front Minnesota dives into the two entities (and the donor experience). Forming a nonprofit or expanding your advocacy work? Understanding the difference between a 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) is essential. Each comes with unique rules... and opportunities.

Ensure your mission aligns with the appropriate organizational structure.

We are posting this placard at all of our offices and asking our union contract farms to post as well.

We encourage our friends to put up similar placards at their business as immigration agents do not have the right to go on private property without permission.

โ€œThere is a cult of ignorance in the United States and there always has been.โ€ โ€” Isaac Asimov.
@georgetakei One of my favourite quotes.
@georgetakei True tho in fairness other so-called intelligent countries have the same disease.
@ononrail @georgetakei it has always been there, but it is spreading faster thanks to social media and the internet

@ononrail

Yeah - we are suffering in Germany ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช tooโ€ผ๏ธ

@georgetakei

@georgetakei Speaking of the Moral Majority . . .
@georgetakei Think about how ignorant the average person is and reflect on the fact that 50% are less informed.
@georgetakei A whole lot of people who never got to experience the emancipating intellectual humilation of "I literally know nothing". Such a shame really. They are really suffering because of it, too.
@georgetakei You're not wrong but it's not just the US. It's in a lot of cultures--places where people seem to think that ignorance is some sort of virtue.
@georgetakei True but I would say this thread runs through the anglo-saxon world and not just usa

@georgetakei It's a sign of morons.

It's as if they are trying to make up for unhappy and unsuccessful school days. ๐Ÿ™„

@georgetakei could you add alt-texts for people who are blind or almost blind?
@georgetakei I wish people would quote the part of the essay where Asimov suggested how to overcome the problem. Itโ€™s a short essay and worth reading. https://encyclopediaasimova.blogspot.com/2012/11/a-cult-of-ignorance-by-isaac-asimov-1980.html?m=1

@georgetakei
Is the U. S. cult of ignorance uncommon compared to other countries?
@stargazersmith @georgetakei Definitely found elsewhere. (I've certainly seen my share of it here in Canada, and in the UK when I lived there.) I suspect it's a human thing.
@georgetakei
Agrarian political movements going back 200 years in Europe and US are the seeds of this. "The centre is rotten".
