โ€œIt's well-demonstrated that you can't build your way out of traffic congestion by building roads โ€” the more you build, the more people drive. As the saying goes, building more lanes to address congestion is like loosening your belt to address obesity.โ€โ€จโ€จThe Law of Traffic Congestion, according to โ€œThe Flash!โ€ My Planetizen article.โ€จโ€จhttps://www.planetizen.com/node/53659โ€จโ€ฉ#InducedDemand #cities #cars #urbanism #transportation #traffic #congestion #city #car #InducedTraffic #JevonsParadox #Flash

If you let any story cut through all the Twitter noise today, please let it be this:

At least six local news websites across Alabama and Florida have been secretly taking payments from power companies to run stories attacking clean energy + other policies

In the Southeast, power company money flows to news sites that attack their critics

Alabama Power and Florida Power & Light hired the consulting firm Matrix to help shape their fortunes. Matrix funded six sites that covered politics, filling a void left by the decline of local news.

1962 passenger rail service in the PNW was literally many times better than in 2022. ๐Ÿ˜ซ

"but the USA is too big and spread out to justify investing in passenger rail networks"

"When we build our landscape around places to go, we lose places to be."

โ€”Rick Cole, urbanist,

The House just passed an atrocious $858 BILLION in annual defense spending.

That's $45B more than Biden even asked for.

Health care?
"We can't afford it."

Child tax credit?
"Too expensive."

Defense spending?
"Here I just found an extra $45 billion dollars laying around."

It's not about whether you personally want to or need to drive. Itโ€™s about understanding the simple truth that in cities, if everyone tries to move by car, no one moves much at all. So the more of us that are enticed to walk, bike & take transit, the better it is for EVERYONE.

If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study.

This isnโ€™t just about choice. Itโ€™s about who pays for your choice.

"Cities are meant to stop traffic. That is their point. That is why they are there. That is why traders put outposts there, merchants put shops there, hoteliers erect inns there. Rationally one wants to have traffic *stop* there, not go *through*."
โ€”Kirkpatrick Sale

Iโ€™m catching myself becoming a more aggressive cyclist. Knocking on hoods to make sure drivers see me crossing and kindly telling drivers at red lights to be careful b/c they almost side-swiped me. I love getting around LA by bike and train. I just wish it was safer.
