looking for a research associate to explore societal engagement with forest restoration on digital media – with @lbngr @gabrielecolombo, Rina Tsubaki & more. Grateful for help sharing with those who might be interested! https://jonathangray.org/2025/05/31/superb-research-associate #digitalmethods #STS #mediastudies #environmentalhumanities
@datascience Thank you for flagging this! I didn't know about case_match(), and I can see it being very useful for most of the cases where I use case_when()!
@amapanda @twm @Geochicas sadly it won't, but I hope to share slides after. Will yours be recorded? I'd love to watch it, too!

Tomorrow, I'll be presenting at #STSItalia "Co-designing participatory data visualizations to evaluate #OpenStreetMap’s #equity: The good, the bad and the neutral", the work I've been doing with @twm and Selene Yang, Alejandra Canclini and Silvia Ribera Alfaro from @Geochicas

This is my PhD thesis

I did not ask for this

I did not consent to this

I did not approve of this

I was not compensated for this

I would not have advised this

I do not like this

And worst of all, the number of people who've read my thesis has still not increased.

@Garwboy lol. They ripped your work and didn't even have the courtesy of giving you the page view.

sigh.

@Garwboy This feels so wrong :S

@Garwboy bloody hell, that's dystopia right there. And apart from the ethics, this also takes "citing the abstract badly" to a whole new level...

edit: placed the quotes properly this time :-)

@JorisMeys @Garwboy, ah, but where does it take “citing the abstract badly to a whole new level…”? (Can't be “a whole new level” as that's part of the quoted phrase…)

[runs away very quickly]

@lp0_on_fire @JorisMeys @Garwboy It does, on fact, take taking it to a whole new level to a whole new level.

That's just how bad A.I. LLM generation is.

@AT1ST @lp0_on_fire @Garwboy yeah yeah all good you both, got the message :-)
@Garwboy Don't worry the AI has made a TV series and a line of fast fashion based on your thesis as well. Next it will write the sequel.
@Garwboy Nothing is sacred anymore

@Garwboy
Post a link.

Now I want to read it.

@notsoloud @Garwboy Oh, never mind. I think I just found it - even before an AI summary!

But Adobe plugins to the rescue! 😭

@Garwboy this happened to one of my articles on Academia as well. After fuming about it for a few days I decided I should write to them and object. So I clicked the link - and it appears the podcast hasn’t been published and I could choose to keep it hidden. I did; and then added an angry comment as feedback.
@Garwboy oh good lord that is the unmotivation I needed to not bother completing my thesis 😬
@Garwboy academia.edu is trash. I recently managed after many years to untangle myself from them, and my inbox is so much better for it.
@Garwboy @xtaldave this is accurate. I deleted my account a few years back bc of questionable business practices, and boy am I glad I did!
@Garwboy send them an invoice
@Garwboy also, I'm so sorry. This is shit

@Garwboy
***An*** AI did this

nobody knows which one

nobody knows the unknown AI’s agenda

and this unknown AI just stole your thesis on how the human brain works?

um. I have several levels of concerns 😕

@Garwboy I was wondering who or what academia.edu is - they recently sent me an unsolicited "summary" of one of my papers from the 1990s: https://www.academia.edu/ai_review/11441712 Most of the time, they send me mails saying who cited or mentioned a paper of mine, which I've been ignoring for years. Would be interested to hear if you have any ideas re how to block this stuff. - Correction: "AI review" it was this time. May have had a "summary" previously.

@proseandpassion @Garwboy most days, academia dot edu sends me this incredibly useful email in the hope I'll pay them money to view my citation of myself 🙃
@alicemcalicepants @proseandpassion @Garwboy maybe you could collaborate?
@blueorangeblue @proseandpassion @Garwboy I mean, I have been known to get into merge conflicts with myself, so it is possible 🤷‍♀️
@alicemcalicepants @blueorangeblue @Garwboy My research papers date from 1990 to 2001 So I'm amazed that the AI would bother digging them up.
@Garwboy 😬🙄🤦‍♀️
@Garwboy I remember signing away the rights to my thesis to the University.

@Garwboy

This is intellectual property theft/subversion.

Worse than that, 'an ai' did not decide to do this. Someone directed it to do so, knew it was dubious, and is eschewing responsibility.

Get with some other plagiarized students and sue.

@Garwboy What would you be feeling if a human did this? At least your ideas are being promulgated. When I was in grad school (long before AI) it was a condition of getting your degree that the dissertation had to given to some subsidiary of Xerox who would hold the copyright and charge anyone who wanted a copy (on paper was the only option for delivery). I got nothing and couldn't even give copies away since a corporation held the copyright.
@Garwboy How many data centers had to be built to generate this… 🤦‍♂️
@Garwboy @mycotropic Not actual legal advice but as a copyright lawyer I think you should talk to your very own copyright lawyer. Depending on lots of things like whatever deal you/your school had with the publisher, this may be an infringement. Even if you can’t get money, you might be able to put a stop to it. Maybe.

@Garwboy Howdy fam; investigative journalist here. I’m really sorry this happened to you, it sounds fucking awful.

Would you be willing to forward that email to me, and link to your original? I’m unfamiliar with the sender and very much outside of academia, but you’ve got me curious.

I’d like to see how widely this is occurring, and if I can identify the humans behind the AI that are using it to obfuscate their involvement.

Bonus points if you self-host and have a list of scrapers

@Haste @Garwboy Academia did the same to my PhD. Thanks for the reminder to take it down from there and put it on the Internet Archive instead.

@SusannahWrites @Garwboy That the issue may be systemic only makes me more interested.

Extending the same offer; I’d love to learn more about your case. If you’d prefer, you can contact me via email (contact@evhaste.com) or Signal (EVHaste.39)

@Garwboy yowsers 😅😅😅😅

@Garwboy

what
the
actual
fuck
is
going
on

@Garwboy how does AI have free access to your dissertation, but when I try to read papers I get blocked by paywalls

@Garwboy

Is that 4 minutes and 45 seconds? 😳

@merileedkarr

@Garwboy Knowledge Commons is an open-access alternative to academia.edu. You can host your work there. And they host a Fedi server with people from universities and academia.

@hello

@Garwboy
Go to the court and benefit from the Barbara Streisand effect.
this is absurd  they're trying to make us accept AI ignoring our consent by sheer persistence
@plushiedata @Garwboy yup, this kind of persistence is also called bullying, specifically, bullying for profit
@Garwboy This is like last year's Spotify Wrapped except for PhDs
@Garwboy The nature of data collection with AI is definitely one of its problems right now. I wish when some new technology came out like this, the people behind it would try to think about it as the big picture and consider just how much effect it can really have, rather than jumping right in.
@Garwboy
As someone said, the purpose of AI is to provide wealth with access to skills, while denying the skilled access to wealth.
@Garwboy your university probably holds the copyright, and might have enough lawyers to do something about it
@Garwboy This is bad. You might want to check @dingemansemark's latest post on exactly this topic (albeit reacting to another bad actor in the field with an example of a successful case against... yet another bad actor...).

@Garwboy academia.edu is horrible, agreed.

A couple of years ago I decided to remove all papers I had previously uploaded there, and replace them with a PDF that a) contains a link to the actual paper, e.g. on Zenodo or HCommons, and b) states my reasons for not hosting the files on academia.edu, mostly pointing to texts criticizing the company.

Nowadays I should probably add 20 pages of deliberate AI slop to those files, to "poison" the materials that crawlers feed to the LLM?

@JonasJRichter @Garwboy I've heard a brabbling markov chain produces great LLM poison.
@Garwboy Wow, a whole PhD thesis in 4:45 ?
@Garwboy well, why did you put it on Shitademia in the first place? Just could have used archive.org
@autunnomia I didn't!
@Garwboy this is even more concerning
@autunnomia right? I don't think I've uploaded it anywhere tbh
@Garwboy Why we even need this? On the Internet we already have quality podcasts/lectures/talks by experts on basically any topics. No one is going to benefit from this plagiarism.
@Garwboy Use Researchgate instead. I abandoned academia ages back for reasons of exploitation.
